Can anyone recommend a UPS for my NAS - anything I should know about choosing a UPS for use with the NAS (dedicated use).

It'll need a USB interface to allow the NAS to cleanly shut-down on low-battery - getting a bit worried with the power failures I've had recently.

What OS you running on the NAS? Keep in mind that you need support on the OS side for comms with the UPS so the brand/model of ups might be important.

They are professional devices which you can rely on.

To me an unreliable UPS or backup is like a parachute with a non functioning rip cord, when you need it it may not work.

+1

I get so many frequent (and severe) brownouts, the cheap UPS I bought can't handle it. I now have some powersurge plugs ontop of the cheapie, but in some cases it's still not enough and causes unexpected shutdowns.

Its a Buffalo device, so their proprietary software I guess - going to check at home what it supports, I know APC is supported, but R2,500 is a lot of money for a UPS.

If talking R2500 as a lot of money for a UPS then I presume you are not looking at a online UPS? If you have very durty electricity and a lot of power outages, then I would suggest you get a online UPS. A lower quality online UPS would be a lot better than a average quality offline UPS. Around a year ago at the hight of load shedding I was looking at getting a UPS for my study because I knew frequent power cuts is not at all good for hard drives, plus if really needed I wanted to be able to send that last mail etc as I work from home, so I wanted a few minuts of UPS power.
Looked at the power rating of all devices I want to run, for me that's a pc, a iMac, a ADSL router and 2 monitor speakers from time to time, critical loads would only be ither the pc or iMac together with the router.
Long story short, I decided on a 1 KVA UPS and also decided on a online UPS to get the cleanest power possible, APC is great but very expensive, eventually I whent for a Mecer, I paid around R3000 for the 1 KVA, this one but only the rack mountable http://www.comx-computers.co.za/ME-1000-FTU-Mecer-1000VA-ON-LINE-UPS-Buy-p-57203.php

I haven't tested it to its battery limits yet, but longest I had my pc and router on before shutting down was between 15 and 20 minuts and it didn't give a battery low alarm yet.
