Hi, would someone be able to recommend a UPS for me to power a gaming PC(750W PSU but likely 600W load) and a 55" Smart TV for loadshedding, 2.5hours?

Preferably someone who can recommend one they are already using for a similar setup.

Thanks!

Thanks! Can you link me to a good place to purchase from?

IF you in jhb order from them, in cpt I can hook you up for cheaper price you require it :)

First get a meter to measure the actual load. Very handy to keep this anyways and always plugged in when you get your inverter.

What is the basic math to calculate the batteries required to run x-watt for x-hours?
100ah battery does 1200watt for 1 hour in perfect conditon, so lets make it 1000watt for 1hour to be safe.

Loadshedding is bit over 2 hours so that reduces it to about 450watt or so over loadshedding period for the battery to get 0%.

Then half again as you want keep deep cycle batteries above 50%.

So I work on 225watt load per 100ah battery.

I am in CT actually, PM me please :) Also, how long does it take to charge once depleted?

Say your load is 100w and you would like to power it for 2 hours.
That would then be 100 x 2 = 200wh.
Say your ups or inverter is 12V.
So you would need 200wh / 12V = 16.67ah
This is the easy part.
Now you should not drain your batteries more than 50%, so you need double the capacity.
16.67 x 2 = 33.33ah
Your inverter or UPS is not 100% effienct, max say 90%, so you need to add another 10% for safety.
33.33ah x 1.1 = 36.67ah.
Your best bet would then be to go for a 40AH battery.

Just remember that your smaller UPS units is designed for very small batteries, like 7ah or there.
These units take very little current to charge, say 1Amp max.
Now install a 100AH battery, the unit would not be able to charge the battery fully in less than 4 days!!!

What's your budget?

I originally had the 2400va unit with 2x 102ah batteries. Found it OK, but not very efficient (and it was noisy), so changed the inverter unit to an Axpert 3000w 24v unit and added 2 more batteries in a 4-bay battery case - works very well, as I run the entire PC setup, routers, laprop, as well as my cctv poe nvr system and a small fridge off it. More than enough power and also pure sine wave output, so no issues with motors, fans, etc.

If you just need a simple solution to run your PC for a few minutes till you shut down, or a TV for around an hour, this has worked for me so far:

Eaton 5e 1500VA UPS

You can even mod it with your own bigger batteries. It comes with 2 x 7Ah 12V alarm batteries inside.
