I have a small server room with two hexa-core amd work horses and a few routers.
The max real power consumption I've seen is 750w from the both of them at full load.
I then have two small offices with a high end desktop pc with 2 lcd's and another office with a mid end desktop with a print server.
I was thinking to get a
1 x APC Smart-UPS XL SUA2200XLi , 5U rackmount convertible , line interactive with AVR+power conditioning , 2200VA ; with monitoring software , usb+serial interface , with smart slot , support multiple extended-run optional battery pack ( SUA48XLBP )
2 x APC SUA48XLBP extended run battery , support SU032a rackmount kit , Volt-Amp-Hour Capacity : 1632 - for Smart-UPS XL SUA2200XLi , SUA3000XLi
for my servers and two of these ...
2 x Apc br1500Lcdi 1500VA + Lcd (replacement for EOL item => APC Back-ups RS BR1500LCDi , line interactive with AVR+power conditioning , with LCD graphics display , 1.2KVA , RJ-11 modem/fax + RJ-45 UTP protection , with monitoring software , usb interface , with cooling fan)
for the 2 offices.
The total cost is like R28k. While ... as long as I save the servers from a spike I'm happy and about 30s time for the generator to kick in, seems the APC resellers are having a problem providing me the above.
Does anyone else have any recommendations on a UPS brand that is good quality, where I can replace the batteries myself and preferably has a LCD where I can see stats and load. Horror stories welcome.
I currently have a 1.5Kw unit from Powercom which went on the blink for a week or two, before I stripped it down, replaced all the bats, cleaned it out, anti-rust treated all the panels, re-assembled, didn't work, tried it again after a week and worked, then died a month later, and a week after that came back to life ..... I'm sick of this.
My 5k inverter is about 30ms too slow to kick in to provide pure sine to the hardware directly, so I shoved cheap ups's inbetween to hold load for 1s .... I don't know, I just want something that I can deploy, maybe have someone look at it once a year to tell me its A-ok and I"m still cool, maybe once every 3yr remind me to replace all the batts or something.
All the servers run Linux as a base OS, so if I can interface with the UPS (like with APC) and network broadcast power outage, 10 mins left on runtime, SHUT DOWN NOW ... it would be awesome.
**** happens, there is NO 100% redundancy, even my brand new generator ate its own face by sucking digital voltage regulator control cable into the air intake manifold (damn ch*** design). I just want something I can chop and change and mcgyver together if I have a problem. Thats the power I had with my generator and inverters and powercoms .... till the electrician decided to wire the generator changeover into the DB board ... and now ... well ... I"m up for anything.
