A friend of mine died a while back.
His email served as a backup of all important documents and correspondence.
On my one laptop I downloaded Thunderbird for mail & downloaded all his mail from the server, prior to the service being terminated onto my laptop for the use of the exeutor of the estate (it is one of those estates worth many many millions & the infighting has begun - there have also been loans to his friends in the hundreds of thousands).

What I need to know, is where in the os does thunderbird store all the mails (about 6500 messages).

Any ideas ?

Windows 7:

\users\username\appdata\local\thunderbird\profiles\funny long named folder

Use Mozbackup to save it, then you can load it on another machine

Haha - ok folks, it was a Mac related question, hence it being posted here.
But crisis over.
If anyone needs to know in future, it turned out to be a quite simple affair.

Open thunderbird, right click on "inbox" > click properties. This will reveal the location within the library of the user account. Simply copy the entire Thunderbird folder contained in that location.

To restore onto a new drive, install thunderbird, and paste the folder to the same location in the library of the user account - thats it !!

Thanks all for your efforts !!

People that are using Thunderbird, like me, usually use Firefox - Mozbackup works the bomb. I prefer to copy the whole profile folder, and use Mozbackup, in case something goes wrong with either method.
