Hello,

I have a 4mb telkom line.
I have a 11GB Local Only Account.

If i buy another account (mweb uncapped 4mb) and set my router into bridge mode. Then setup PPPoE connections through Windows, Will the speed of the accounts be halved because there is two accounts?

not necessarily unless you setup some form of load balance.

so i wont get reduced speeds if someone in the house is using the local account and someone is using the Mweb account?

yes you will IF someone is using the mweb account

your speed will be whatever bandwidth is left over i.e 4mb - (amount of bandwidth used by mweb account) = speed you will get

Not sure how it balances out though.

If someone is maxing out one of the accounts, then the other account will suffer if it is used at the same time (at least for a while until it starts to balance).

If you have a 4mbps line, then the maximum speed you can get out of it is 4mbps, no matter what. Running 2 simultaneous PPPOE connections at full speed on one 4mbps line, won't magically give you 8mbps total downlink throughput. The 4mbps line is a fixed size pipe, that will be shared between the 2 connections, and the ratio in which they are shared depends on multiple factors that are too complex to try to understand, unless you are into network engineering and understanding flow systems.

It's simple maths really: Bandwidth > Sum of downloads
If your line is synchronizing at 4Mbps, your downloads can never exceed 4Mbps in total (even if you dial multiple accounts).

Yip it is pretty simple, if you are a bit of a geek, a MyBB regular, or work in the IT field, and understand how ADSL works. Most regular users don't understand ADSL, let alone what it means to sync, or what an exchange or DSLAM is...

Ah I have exceeded 400 k before on a regular basis especially if you are constantly downloading, that is on a telkom or @lantic accounts. But if you talking about Mweb AkA SLOW Web! then it will be limited to 400, oh CR@P did I say 400 come on more like 30k.

Best bet is to go for @lantic gold accounts that is if you like me and your line has been upgraded.
and your average down speed is 700-900. I think that it is a little unfordable to have telkom accounts even if they have been increased, that is if you happen to be a heavy downloader but hopefully things will change. It is all very exciting.

I don't advise anyone getting mweb uncapped :)

The theoretical maximum speed on a 4 mbps line is 512 KBytes/s (4096/8). The practical maximum is about 430 KBytes/s, after you take into account protocol overhead. So pushing 400 KBytes/s on a 4mbps line is well within the limits. You haven't achieved something special here.

Also, even if you managed to greatly exceed 430 KBytes/s, it wouldn't be for more then a few seconds, as the reporting software can often report the wrong figure for the first few seconds of what appears to be a traffic spike, which is in fact your reporting software doing the calculation incorrectly (average speed of a fixed, albeit small, period of time) due to various reasons.

450kB/s (which is just more than 10% overhead) should be easily obtainable on a decent 4Mbps connection. One of the best capped ADSL bundles that you'll get would be the WebAfrica Titan Complete packages: http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/titan_dsl_special

At the moment I'd rather go for a 4Mbps (or 10Mbps in a month's time) Mweb connection than for an IS uncapped package if you're going to be downloading more than 30GB/month! IS is throttling you to the ground once you end up in the top 50% users.

That Is imposable mewb have a security system so I should not worry about that. But who the hell would want a Mweb account.

mweb is awsum, i get full speeds most of the time.
People need to stop basing it because i have done practically 40Gb in two days with it!

My torrents (well seeded) unfortunately never break 120kb which kinda sucks and most file sharing sites sit at a constant 60kb which is ok i guess...

I'm sorry that does not cut it for me after the recently 10meg line upgrade, so im not happy with a dumb 4meg slowweb uncapped package and that is if its even close to 4 meg constantly at night or at any other time which its not. I have all so noticed heavy shaping at night as well. I cant go back man to a crappie mweb account after been able to downloading a movie in +/- 10 min.

I cant wait until we have true uncapped accounts that's not shaped, cant f@cken wait. I don't give a f@ck about there not been enough capacity available, I expect to get what I paid for and now have made up my mind to go with a VPN.
As was said on a tv show once upon a time screw you guys (Mweb)

LOL wilson.

You get what you pay for...

Mweb will be upgrading their 4Mbps uncapped to 10Mbps somewhere in September. If you want a fast 10Mbps connection, go for the WebAfrica Titan Specials (25/50GB bundles) for R600/R800 respectively.
Alternatively, go for the R1000-R2000pm uncapped packages which aren't as heavily shaped.

From my experience, Mweb is one of the better uncapped providers, but of course if you're trying to download with the wrong protocols / wrong servers / during office hours, you'll get terrible speeds!

Its really a shame that there are many people like you who want to download the all of the available illegal content on the Internet during office hours at high speeds and only expect to pay a small monthly fee.

anecdotal evidence would put speeds closer to 420-430 on average
