URGENT VIRUS WARNING: CryptoLocker ransomware



A very nasty computer virus is currently in circulation. The virus is known as CryptoLocker and it encrypts files on the infected computer. On finishing it displays a message to inform the victim of this fact and prompts him/her to pay a ransom of $300 (R3 000) in order to decrypt the files. A timer is also displayed stating that the person has three days to pay the ransom, otherwise the encryption key will be deleted and it will be impossible to decrypt the files. Once the payment has been sent, the files are decrypted as promised. The victim thus has two options – pay the ransom, or lose his/her files.



This virus is typically spread through emails with the pretence that it is from DHL, Amazon, Fedex, etc. These emails contain a zipped attachment that, when opened, infects the computer.



You are therefore advised to immediately delete any unsolicited mail containing zipped attachments received from any source unless you have very good reason to believe that its content is above reproach.



GOLDEN RULE: Always take care not to open zipped attachments to unsolicited email messages as these often contain viruses.

DRINGENDE VIRUS WAARSKUWING: CryptoLocker-afdreigkode



'n Baie gevaarlike rekenaarvirus is tans in omloop. Die virus staan as CryptoLocker bekend en dit kodeer ("encrypt") lêers op die besmette rekenaar. By voltooiing vertoon dit 'n boodskap om die slagoffer dienooreenkomstig in kennis te stel en eis 'n losprysbetaling van $300 (R3 000) om die lêers te dekodeer. 'n Tydmeter word vertoon wat aandui dat die persoon drie dae het om die losprys te betaal, andersins sal die koderingsleutel vernietig word en sal dit onmoontlik wees om die lêers te dekodeer. Wanneer die betaling gestuur is, word die lêers wel gedekodeer soos belowe is. Die slagoffer het dus twee opsies – betaal die losprys, of verloor sy/haar lêers.



Aanduidings is dat die virus per e-pos versprei word wat voorgee om van DHL, Fedex, Amazon, ens af te kom. Die e-posboodskap bevat 'n gekompakteerde (‘zipped’) aanhangsel wat, wanneer dit oopgemaak word, die rekenaar besmet.



U word dus aangeraai om enige ongevraagde e-pos met gekompakteerde aanhangsels wat u vanaf enige bron ontvang onmiddellik te skrap, tensy u goeie rede het om te glo dat die inhoud daarvan bo verdenking is.



GOUE REËL: Wees altyd baie versigtig om nie gekompakteerde aanhangsels oop te maak wat saam met ongevraagde e-posboodskappe kom nie, aangesien dit meestal virusse bevat.

Dunno about that, but on the reddit link I posted there are sample virus.exe files for you.
