The White House has said that a US counterterrorism operation in January killed two hostages who were being held by al-Qaeda.

Dr Warren Weinstein, an American held by the militants since 2011, was one of those killed in the raid in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The other hostage was Giovanni Lo Porto, an Italian national held since 2012.

President Barack Obama is to speak later about the incident.

Dr. Warren Weinstein, an American aid worker held hostage by al Qaeda, was accidentally killed in a U.S. counter-terrorism operation, along with an Italian hostage, Giovanni Lo Porto, and another American who was an al Qaeda leader, the White House announced on Thursday. Officials also announced that a separate operation killed Adam Gadahn, another American who became a prominent al Qaeda member.

The White House said it was unaware the four were present at the sites targeted.

"The operation targeted an al-Qa'ida-associated compound, where we had no reason to believe either hostage was present, located in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. No words can fully express our regret over this terrible tragedy," the White House said in a statement.

"The President directed that the information being shared today, which was properly classified until now, be declassified and shared with the American people. He takes full responsibility for these operations and believes it is important to provide the American people with as much information as possible about our counterterrorism operations, particularly when they take the lives of fellow citizens.

"The uniquely tragic nature of the operation that resulted in the deaths of two innocent hostages is something we will do our utmost to ensure is not repeated. To this end, although the operation was lawful and conducted consistent with our counterterrorism policies, we are conducting a thorough independent review to understand fully what happened and how we can prevent this type of tragic incident in the future."

But in good news, we killed a filthy traitor. Hope you focus on that.

Instead of blaming the USA for doing something against terrorists, how about we blame the idiots who keep going to third-world Islamic ****holes and getting their dumb asses kidnapped and killed?

Even though I posted that pic, I will say this. In the grand scheme of things I think a heck of a lot more good was done by wiping this al Qaeda filth off of the face of the planet. I just wish they had killed more.

yeah but who created them?

Did any of you anti US dummies even read the article ?

It wasn't a rescue attempt.

i'm guessing you are going to blame the americans . . . . . . .or maybe the jews or . . . . .

I'm not blaming them, they gave this organisation weapons because of the enemy of my enemy is my friend mentality, this is fact.

They now give weapons to "rebels" in Syria and continue to give huge amounts of money to Pakistan.

These are facts, feel free to blame whoever you wish.

I was watching a documentary last night about the USA,Taliban and Al-Qaida.

Was about how the US recruited the Taliban to fight against Bin Laden, when US left Afghanistan to fight in Iraq, the Taliban came back and took over Afghanistan. And so on. How the US funded the Taliban and even trained Bin Laden before all this happened.

A funny fact on there was something about the US being at War somewhere for 255 years out of the last 260 years of something like that. Was pretty damn good the documentary. But it's almost 4 hours long :o. Will get the name tonight.

wow, what an insightful post! you have enlightened everyone here.

As Randhir would say, lower your expectations. It's DarkSpectre after all. The sum total of his contribution to myBB is either **** this or **** that.

Not quite. They gave arms and training to the Mujahideen groups, who were guerilla fighters during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

After the war ended these groups started fighting among themselves over power and eventually the Taliban grew out of this.

Countries fall out all the time. For a time relations are friendly, then they arent. The Russians had the same problem with Poland and other eastern european countries. As a result some of their best equipment ended up in the hands of their arch enemy, NATO.

These are facts too.

Yea, might have tried to over simplify it slightly.
Will post a link to the documentary when I get home this afternoon.
