US Election 2020 - The Result

Agreed. Democrats had all the advantages - badly handled pandemic, stuttering growth etc. - and yet they were unable to obtain a decisive victory. That should worry Democrats deeply even if they ultimately eek out a win.

Trump will be too old in 2024. Need someone younger - Josh Hawley 2024!
It just shows that charisma counts for a lot more to many Americans than almost anything else. The dems are lacking that character.

Eke

Well they had one major disadvantage, which is the incumbent advantage. And a lot of the advantages they seemed to have are also kind of mirages... for instance even though Trump mismanaged the pandemic enormously, he did what he had to do to make it look like he hadn't. Releasing a lot of stimulus money helped to buoy the economy towards the end; and then Trump just shouted over the scientists, and I think to a lot of Americans his bluster and projected confidence was the message they wanted to hear.

But yeah, Trump's continued strength will be one of the enduring mysteries of the US electorate.

Most Americans are as attached to their political affiliation as they are to their religion. They will not change their vote regardless of what happens.
There's a very small proportion that applies critical thinking and will change votes. These are the ones that actually decide the election

They really do need someone who people can actually be enthusiastic about.

I mean look at what the Republicans touted off as their best candidate before Trump showed up.

Both parties will probably have to do some work after this.

Love him or hate him, Trump was a rallying point for the Reps. His charisma drew people in and he effectively became the party. Interesting to see how the Reps fair when they have to step out of Trump's shadow.

For the Dems, I see a bit of an identity crisis. They are riding the progressive train hard but these elections have shown that Americans are not all ready for that and you still need to consider the moderate and conservative-leaning voter.

You could argue those are the ones that voted for Trump this time around. The anti-trump movement is/was massive yet despite those that chose not to vote in 2016 because of Hillary the popular vote is not much different given the much larger turnout.

I wonder who will run in 2024

In addition, the Trump campaign could also argue that there was a significant potential for vote fraud because of the presumption the Pennsylvania court imposed on its extension order: Ballots are to be deemed timely submitted even if they lack a legible postmark — or any postmark at all — proving they were mailed on or before November 3. Obviously, this creates the possibility that ballots could be harvested and submitted post-election without postmarks — theoretically, in large enough quantities to change the result that would have been obtained if only the ballots truly submitted by November 3 were tallied.

I have to say, it does seem shady that PA allows ballots up to 6th November without a postmark. Not super happy with any state allowing mail in ballots arriving after ED but if it has a postmark of the 3rd of November then it is fine, but no postmark? What kind of fresh hell is this?

I think either Mike Pence or Ted Cruz would be the strongest candidate.

Dems have a serious problem if they have had to have the votes of dead people to bolster their election.
What if the dead people voted for Trump? Serious question.

I can tell you a bit from Indian perspective, although my sample (WA etc) would be very small. Huge number of the Indians in USA silently support trump because they think Modi (labelled right wing in India) has good ties with Trump even if Trump has frequently trashed India.

These people are HNWI (usually) and generally belong to higher caste, so there is that supremist angle from a caste perspective and many of them aspire to be whiter than whites and you know which republicans I am talking about. Again Indian votes hardly matter in terms of count (could matter in terms of money collection) but there would be similar thing with Hispanic vote as well but we don't have any hispanic here to chip in.

Of course, this is just but one angle of support. There must be multitudes of reasons.

So hard that they just elected Biden and Kamala Harris  Seriously this is not a progressive party. I wish it was, but it isn't. Biden was deliberately chosen because of his bipartisan appeal and Kamala Harris is also miles away from progressive.

Then we see some real oddities coming out of the election that indicate that if the Democratic party had perhaps leaned into some real progressive policies it might have helped them. Florida with a $15/hr minimum wage. Marijuana legalization all over the place.

That and the association with the far-left scared many Americans.

I mean, sure, Trump has left a sour taste in many people's mouths, which is why he will lose. But look at the results in the House and Senate.

They don't necessarily want Trump as a leader (although time will tell), but they definitely don't want Democratic governance.

Since Biden is not known for his incomprehensible gaffes, it seems that he has some explaining to do with regard to what he meant about putting a voter fraud organisation together...
