Great Scott!! I think you have just solved all the world's economic problems. All the government has to do is hand out money to people, then cancel the debt. I mean it would only add another $1.6 trillion to the debt. What is that between friends AMIRITE?

If you want to look at student debt, the system needs to be reformed before you can even think of a bailout. Currently the government hands out money to people who have 0 chance of paying it back. Giving a $50 000 loan to someone studying a BA in underwater basket weaving isn't an investment. Giving the same amount of money to a medical student is.

So I would suggest that before you even start bailing out student loans, you tighten up the criteria on how they give loans. For people out of school, you base it on their SAT scores and the degree they are studying. For people in university, you base it on whether they have failed any modules or not. You allow one extra for a degree to give people some leeway (so if it is a 3 year degree, they get 4 years, 4 year degree they get 5). If they need more than 1 year extra to finish their starting degree, no more government money.

Some root cause analysis needed.

How could someone studying lesbian dance theory get loans of 50k ?
Who in their right mind would lend that person the money?

Even better, tie the loan to specific professions that will be in demand in 5 years time, thus incentivising supply to meet demand. E.g. for some bizarre reason there is going to be a shortage of archaeologists in 5 years, then pump the loans. But I suspect you are implying that with your post?
That is exactly what I was implying. The loans have to be linked to reality.

I can get on board with that. So we have solved who get loans but would you also concede that cost of university has got out of control and that you also need some kind of mechanism to align costs with the reality with future incomes? So perhaps it is reasonable to not expect our in demand professions to have to be in debt for decades after graduating? This could be achieved through increasing real incomes or reducing the cost of education. How exactly you do that I will admit I don't know.

That is also part of the problem.

Or just don't go to university at all unless you want to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer or some specialized witchcraft like taxation or quantum physics. Point is, we have have far too many useless degrees.

More dishonest media people. This one didn’t’ even know that the Dr was standing right there.

Or: Dr Fauci was gagged, and when the story broke, he was made to deny it, fearing for his job. Him denying that he was gagged, it consistent with him having been gagged. Where else would the story have come from?

What I saw yesterday, during Trump's visit to the NHI, was a bunch of doctors who were "managing" a narcissist. Doctors receive training in bedside manner, and one of the things that they get taught, is how to handle a narcissist. Here's an educational video dealing with precisely this:

More narcissistic kuk

Yes but even for the useful degrees it is ending with people being in debt for a very long time. The cost of the education just does not align with the expected future return anymore. It has become a snowball that is now at the bottom of the hill.

In other words it's a bubble and what goes up must come down. Gen Z is already starting to say nuh-uh.

Nearly 20% of Generation-Z and young Millennials say they might choose not to attend college.

Supply and demand is the reason why that happened. The government opened the floodgate for free money in higher education. What does higher education do? It puts the prices up.

The people who are in debt for decades are the ones who don't graduate in time, and who don't study stuff that other people will find useful.
I think it is perfectly reasonable to be in debt for your education, after all you are the person who benefits the most from it.

This could be achieved through increasing real incomes or reducing the cost of education. How exactly you do that I will admit I don't know.
Well you decrease taxes (more take home pay), stop subsidising worthless degrees (reduces inflationary pressure on education), getting people to move into the trades (which there is colossal demand for in the US). Also creating alternative forms of qualifications.

This is one of the areas that government can actually do something productive with their resources. Every year, they set out exams that cover a variety of topics that industry needs. Anyone can apply for and write these exams. They are p**s hard, and genuinely test a person's ability in a specific field. If you pass them you get a qualification for that specific exam. Then people don't need to go to university if they cannot afford it. They can study in whatever way they want to. That would be a game changer in terms of higher education.
