I also would like to know, what known software need or use oracle. I know java and windows etc. I think they also in with SAP.
 
Amazing how the ANC government can run SOE's this bad that they cannot even pay their service providers. In this case, Oracle.
Eskom will most probably use this as a another pathetic excuse that they will have to increase tariffs. They will hold the country to ransom as an excuse to increase tariffs to pay their service providers. This will be treason.
 
I bet you BBD or Jumo can sort them out asap and cheaper and better systems. Why they with a Dinosaur... So much better tech exists today. The migration they are told is hard, is not. The right team knows how to pull it over. Why don't they support local dev houses.

Really.... A custom designed system is going to be better and cheaper than an enterprise grade multi billion dollar system that has decades of design and experience behind it?

According to the report, Oracle’s software is used in critical Eskom operations, including an “online vending system” that processes 77 million transactions of electricity sales a month.


Eskom also reportedly uses Oracle products and services for load monitoring of electricity generation by power stations and has supplied a maintenance tool called Maximo used for asset management and power outages, logging of faults and control of the grid.
 
Sounds similar to the SAPS situation. It's truly epic mismanagement to the let these disputes deteriorate to a point where the providers are about to cut you off. Disgraceful.

Not sure about Eskom specific applications, but most of these out of the box enterprise financial and ERP systems are built with some database abstraction layer, so that they can leverage the same code across multiple applications.

It's a dog for performance, so it drives up costs, but they normally support multiple database backends. Very little coding necessary, just a ton of QA and infrastructure work.

But even that is a drop in the bucket compared to the administrative overhead, finance and C-level executives interfering with what should be a simple technology project. Remember, they need to use every opportunity to enrich the cadres.

Yes of course, they use lots of Oracle at places like Amazon and Google or modern banks. Oh wait, they don’t.

Not to mention what the cost of developing and switching to multiple custom solutions would be at a time where Eskom cannot afford to do so.

It's amusing how many people on here are trying to apply overly simplistic solutions and best practice to a corporate with operations and scope the size of Eskom's.

Ummm amazon used oracle until 2020 just btw...

But Oracle is used by many banks, both modern and legacy. It's used by many fortune 500 companies, etc.

FYI I detest oracle DB
