US politics general thread

Well well. Trump has been stating that Google and other big tech companies are not impartial. Guess he wasn't lying.

https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2018...derships-dismayed-reaction-to-trump-election/

And? Sergey Brin and Sundar Pichai are immigrants (Brin is a Russian refugee). Do you expect them to be thrilled about the election of an explicitly anti-immigrant populist like Trump?

Pretty shocked to be honest.

People don't like Trump!

They are openly talking about tampering search results to favor their own values.

Actually they're talking about countering fake news, which they and Facebook should have done a long time ago.

(00:54:33) An employee asks what Google is going to do about “misinformation” and “fake news” shared by “low-information voters.” Pichai responds by stating that “investments in machine learning and AI” are a “big opportunity” to fix the problem.

What they never did was discuss biasing their search results to favour left-wing news outlets.

Not surprised you would defend Google like that. Would you still defend them the same way if they were anti-Hilary Clinton, and were talking about conservative or right leaning values?

And, I am not saying that they should be Trump supporters. They shouldn't be discussing their personal political views in the workplace like that as they should be presenting an impartial front. That is very far from impartial, and creates a hostile work environment for the people who do not support the Democrats or Clinton. They are rejecting all conservative and right ideology. You are not thinking further than "omg TRUMP".

And I was shocked at the pure unprofessional behaviour on display from executives of Google. Not the Trump hate. They even spoke about about immigration out of the US. What a joke.

Shame. Republicans implemented the deregulation on non-partisan, balanced news and now they bitch when things like this happen.

Again. Shame.

So, you believe Google should filter information based on their own internal value system?

And I thought this thread was impartial. Seems like it's just an anti-Trump / leftist circle jerk.

Just FYI, I am not anti or pro Trump. He is what he is. He was a better option than Hilary though. Shame.

Lol. Did you just ask a question then proceed as if I had answered?

And I thought you were replying in good faith. Seems like it's just the usual conservatard whine-session

I am not a Conservative.

Again, confirmed. This is not about impartial discussion from both sides. I understand now. It's ok to be hypocritical when it suits our narrative.

If they talked about it internally but didn't turn it into company policy, sure. Individuals are allowed to have opinions, even at the highest levels of an organization. I'd imagine if you could record the boardrooms of Fox News it wouldn't sound great to liberals.

In fact even if they did turn it into company policy, so what? They're a private company. See the example of Fox News, above.

And, I am not saying that they should be Trump supporters. They shouldn't be discussing their personal political views in the workplace like that as they should be presenting an impartial front.

So, they shouldn't have had a company meeting to discuss the impacts of a drastic political shift? And employees shouldn't have been permitted to express their private feelings at the meeting? If anything this clip validates that there's a separation between personal feelings and company policy at Google.

That is very far from impartial, and creates a hostile ordainment for the people who do not support the Democrats or Clinton. They are rejecting all conservative and right ideology.

Naughton does acknowledge “diversity of opinion and political persuasion” and notes that she has heard from conservative Google employees who say they “haven’t felt entirely comfortable revealing who [they] are.” and urged “tolerance.”

You are not thinking further than "omg TRUMP".

Actually no, that's you, frothing over a non-story that doesn't at all prove systemic bias.

Really? Maybe you should also 'understand' asking a question then assuming the answer.

At least we 'confirmed' that you're comfortable doing that.

Another Classical Liberal?

No. But you can keep trying.

Actually no, that's you, frothing over a non-story that doesn't at all prove systemic bias.

Like how people have frothed over Trump's first Tweets of the day? lulz

This story is actually trending now in the US.

Not frothing over the mouth. Just pointing out that there is some validity to what Trump has said. If you think that those internal biases don't make their way into their design decisions, you are a fool. Would you be ok with Google execs being openly pro-Trump and insulting all lefties?

If it's fine for POTUS, why should anyone else be held to any sort of higher standard? That's the level of discourse the Republicans have allowed to take over their party and the country, why whine about it when it comes back at you?

This recording categorically does not prove that there's validity to what Trump said. This is what would prove it: find a case where a search result was clearly tampered to display biased anti-Trump results.

Update — After Breitbart News published this article, a Google spokesperson replied to a request for comment with the following statement:

“At a regularly scheduled all hands meeting, some Google employees and executives expressed their own personal views in the aftermath of a long and divisive election season. For over 20 years, everyone at Google has been able to freely express their opinions at these meetings. Nothing was said at that meeting, or any other meeting, to suggest that any political bias ever influences the way we build or operate our products. To the contrary, our products are built for everyone, and we design them with extraordinary care to be a trustworthy source of information for everyone, without regard to political viewpoint.”

Oh look. An actual nothingburger.

Except it's usual to see that conservatives expect workers to be good little fascists. Personal freedom hey? Individual liberty hey?
