US urges China to drop filter rule

The United States ramped up pressure on China Wednesday to drop a new requirement for all computers to carry Internet filtering software, fearing it was a means for censorship.

Surely, those who wish to have access to "illegal" data, will be able to remove said filtering sofware. I know a paranoid friend who did such, and uninstalled Xp and replaced it with Linux.....

Previously it was reported that the software was merely "requested" by China gov and that manufacturers could opt to load the software or not, now this:

But Chinese state media said Tuesday that Beijing would not back away from the new rule.

what gives??
