Hi

I need to apply for a visa to the USA way way in advance, because I won't be in the country to do it nearer the time. So I want to apply now for travel that will probably only be in September. Will this be a problem? I've heard they usually give visas that are valid for 10 years. Is this the case? Has anyone applied recently and got anything less than one year? I'm unmarried, no kids, and I'll be leaving my job in order to go on this long trip. I do own three properties here in SA and my parents live here. I have a brother in the USA so I'll get him to write a letter inviting me over.

Thanks,
Ros.

I too got ten years, you might have to get something to say that you are coming back here though, they could be finicky about that, the good thing is, u can apply now before buying any tickets.

Do not, under any circumstances tell them that. Automatic rejection.

OK - I won't volunteer the information, but aren't they going to want letters from my employer saying I'm coming back to my job? Don't they ask on the form if one is married and has children? Sure, I won't volunteer the information, but if they ask me, I can't lie about it. I have had a US visa before, valid from 2001-2011.

What does one do if one is a freelancer, which is actually closer to my situation than "leaving my job". My "job" is an informal understanding with a company that I do a certain amount of work for them and they pay me a retainer. But I have multiple income sources.

confirmation of employment is not usually required, if done, it is telephonic.

of primary concern when assessing a visa application:
not a danger or threat to state or citizens
not going to be a financial burden on the state
not going to take the job of a local citizen

the fact that you have been granted a visa in the past puts you in a good position
as does the residency of your brother
property ownership is usually indication of intent to return

residency of parents has no relevance in assessing an application

never volunteer too much information - if it is required, you will be asked.
do not lie in the application - if discovered you will be flagged & need never bother applying again.

I also got 10 years, recently. Sure, the form says to bring all your documents along, etc, but as far as I could see, they didn't ask many people for them.
