Usage meter

Hi - I'm using the Sygate Firewall. As I said, even when I "block all" something keeps ticking over according to the usage meter. I'm also running Spt-Bot and Ad-Aware. Is there somewhere that I can look to see what is actually accessing the internet?
Thanks

Sorry - 'nother quick question - is the Odyssey Intermediate Driver part of the Vodafone software?

I have no experience with Sygate, I personally use Computer Associates EZ Armor on all my Windoze boxes to secure program access - it is an extension of ZoneAlarm...

If all else fails then consider trying NetLimiter as per a previous post in this thread...

Maybe get Microsft Anti-spyware and give it a quick check, ive found it actually finds alot of things ad-aware doesnt.

Hey Slak,

Some firewalls don't apply the settings to "current" connections - so if the connection is already open it will only be blocked once it is closed and re-opened (or tried to :) ). I personally don't use Sygate, but I know of a couple of people that do, but I don't know the inner workings that well. Once the connection is up netstat can show where the connections go to:

Code:
netstat -a

That might take a while to run since it will resolve the IP's

Code:
netstat -a -n

Will show the same, except it will not resolve the IP's

It might be a big post but if not post it or PM it to myself and we can have a look :)

Laterz !!!

I suggest you get a a good firewall like ZoneAlarm which shows which apps are using the internet. There a few ones like Agnitum and Sygate which is more advanced showing nicely every port and which app is using it. That way you can actually block an app directly from there.

Also a quick shortcut is to go into command prompt and type "netstat", it will also show all active connection [but not which app is using it].

THE BEST firewall, in my opinion, and my opinion is not 100% reliable as i have not used all the firewalls available, is BLACKICE. Search for it on google or visit www.iss.net
It stops ALL intruders and even has an application protection feature which stops app from starting on their own or sending/receiving info without u authorizing it to do so.
And as for a download meter, DU METER should be the best.

Just to say thanks to everyone for all the help and suggestions. I definitely feel in charge of my laptop again!

Slak, what was causing the problem? - the suspense is killing me :).

Er um, massive infestation of a myriad nasties? Dunno what they were exactly, but with the belts and braces approach of spyware, firewall, more spyware, virus protection, they seem to have been beaten back and my MB seem safe again. And I get to meet all you nice people and find out about cool utilities like DuTraffic, so maybe it was a useful experience.

LOL, ja malware nasties, thought so, malware is the #1 reason for any net connection being extremely slow :).

Someone suggested a great idea the other day, a sort of Broadband for Beginners thread, methinks the mention of firewall etc should be at the top of the list...
