USB 3.0 gets double speed boost

Well, USb 3.0 has the potential to be a replacement for Thunderbolt, in the meantime, more and more motherboards will ship with Thunderbolt

I just don't see the value. According to Anandtech it adds about $40 to the cost of a board - with USB 3.0 on all new motherboards, why pay the premium?

It's because of all those lacie external thunderbolt hdd's that literally everybody, their grannies and dogs have.

Or those untold billions of flashdrives with thunderbolt connectors.

Catch a wake up pal.

I don't know anyone with a Thunderbolt device, pal.

Neither do I.
Its like I mentioned about firewire further back, very few people used it while everyone used USB at some stage.
With the speed increase in USB you will probably find thunderbolt going the same way firewire did.

Huh? Why would you need to a flashdrive with Thunderbolt? USB should be more than enough for that

Well you know now that Jstrike doesn't know what to do with all his thunderbolt devices ?

I was just pulling your leg though :)

No, Worries ;)

It drives me nuts when people bring me crappy USB 1.0 devices so I can copy something for them. Takes forever to fill 16GB's. USB 3.0 devices make me smile a lot because it's over and done with in a jiffy and they can piss off. :p

Oh, I agree USB 3.0 definitely is useful. But 10Gb transfer rates are already available, and will be widely used by the time 10Gb US 3.0 is available

That upgrade is rather pointless for external HDD's, but useful for external SSD's.
My USB 3.0 external HDD pulls maximum 100MB/s - roughly 800Mbps.

About Thunderbolt. I never seen it used widely on media storage. Either my googling is terrible or there is not much Thunderbolt devices.
USB 3.0 is already being used in flash drives and it is a big plus on list.

Agreed, possibly it will be like Firewire: you need to buy external card or expensive motherboard + must find device that uses one.

I was going to mention drive limitations but Jagtiger beat me to it, USB3 as it is right now is just fine. Heck I can hardly notice a difference between an SSD in an external housing and one connected to an internal SATA3 port.

This is what Thunderbolt was meant for, the aggregation of multiple types of cables (inc USB3) ...
