Several Transformers for gadgets output 12V, that might be easier to use than boosting 5V. What do you need to power?

looks dangerous, if anything on the 12v needs more than 833 milliamps your USB port on your computer is going to hate you as it can only deliver up to 2 amps

Even worse actually, usb 3 is apparently rated at 900ma at 5v thats 375ma at 12v if the boost converter is 100% efficient.

So the question is what does OP want to power, cause using a usb portit can't exceed 375ma

Startup power requirements?
Some devices pull extra to startup. I would think the USB port would protect itself when power is exceeded

I think you may have a point there - I should maybe try it again using a better (2.4A) USB supply and try to measure the voltage and current at startup
