I keep getting this balloon popping up in the lower right hand screen at random! It can happen every few seconds, minutes or not at all. And everytime with the same message, "USB Device not recognized". I have no USB device plugged into that port though!!! I have disabled that USB port from device manager but all it does is render that port useless and doesn't stop the irritation from appearing! So I have re-enabled it.

Does anyone know what could be causing this problem and more importantly how to solve it! I am running XP service pack 2 with the latest updates.

I have no idee what causes it but I know how you could fix it( It worked for me but i'm not promising anything)

Go to control-panel / system / hardware / device manager. Then go to Universal serial bus controllers and right click on everyone and uninstall it. after you've done that (with everyone) go to the action drop down menu at the top and search fo hardware changes. After that bubbles will start popping up at the bottem of your screen saying found new hardware. Wait for that to finish and after that your problem should be fixed.:)

I get that message when I plug a USB2 device into a USB1 port, or if the port in question can't power the USB port sufficently (external HD).

Only other thing is do you have the MOBO drivers for USB properly installed, or are you xp drivers?

I was having the same problem. Solved it by removing a dodgy USB extension cable that had nothing plugged in to it. :p
