USB External HDD

Hi,
I have a Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 and am having problems with it being recognized when connecting.
I have used all my USB connections without success, yet the USB cable to my printer recognizes the printer but not the HDD.
I have tried this Unit on other PC's and it connects without any problem.
Any assistance you can provide will be much appreciated.

Thanks to those of you who did reply, however I am unable to find Disk Management as my OS is XP Home and I understand that this facility is only available in XP Pro.
When I plug in the USB cable I get the message that it does not recognize the HDD.

It should be available for XP Home users too

How to use Disk Management
To start Disk Management:
1. Log on as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
2. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
3. In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears. Your disks and volumes appear in a graphical view and list view. To customize how you view your disks and volumes in the upper and lower panes of the window, point to Top or Bottom on the View menu, and then click the view that you want to use.
NOTE: Microsoft recommends that you create a full back up of your disk contents before you make any changes to your disks or volumes.

Nope, it's defiantely there in XP Home. You do need to be an administrator though.
Check if you're an Admin: Control Panel -> Users (I think)

EDIT: pedruid ... My extrnal drive comes with an E-SATA cable and a USB cable, and the USB cable only works when I unplug the E-SATA cable.

pedruid, is this a new problem you're having i.e. has your external ever worked properly?

Sounds like a new drive letter needs to be assigned.

It would still show up in Disk Management if it didn't have a drive letter...
