I have a USB hard that was working fine, except yesterday it started saying "USB Device not recognized" every time I plug it in.

I think it had something to do with my pc as it corrupted 2 of my disks as well. It's a friends disk and a sealed unit so I don't want to open it up and lose the warranty.

Do anybody know of any utility I can download that can try and detect the disk and maybe scan it?

Any help will be greatly appreciated and can result in me buying you beer.

Thanks a lot

Does the same happen with another usb hdd, or have you tried it in another machine. if it does the same in another machine, perhaps the usb hardware interface is broken, doubt its the hdd, but you should also scan for virus's on your PC.

Try connecting the drive to another PC...

I have tried the drive on another machine and I get the same errors.

My other USB drive works fine on the machine

If you manage to pick up the drive but cant access it, try running: chkdsk volume: /r

Some BIOS's will, do you pick it up in diskmgmt.msc ? BTW is 2.5" or 3.5"?

Remove the HD from the housing and connect it directly to you PC.

What brand & model is the drive?

Did you plug it in on your front panel usb ports or at the back? I have seen problems with front panel usbs and external drives.

I've tried both, when I plug it into my linux box I only get this in my messages file

I'm trying to avoid that as it is a sealed unit. It's a Toshiba PX1396E-3T01, 1TB, USB 2.0

I have exactly the same drive. Been using it for a couple of months without problems. Then a couple of weeks ago i plug it in and i get similar errors, data goes missing, corrupt etc.
Taking it out of housing and connecting it straight up to the machine, got it working 100% again. Once you have done this, i would back the data up immediately as it might not last long after that (altho mine has been running fine since - think it has something to do with the toshiba housing, but could be under correction)

Cool thanks, did you put it back into the housing again?

Nah, I've left it in the pc since ( still working ). Im yet to shut down the pc, to take it out and hook it up to the casing again. I want to get another drive and put it in the housing and test, then i can confirm if its the housing or maybe cable, just trying to find a sata drive lying around here is near impossible :D
