I am looking for the best usb skype phone for use on my laptop
I am tired of some of the rubbish out there!
Any suggestions?

This is a catch-22 situation, cos the "better" the products become... the more complex with drivers etc, and more that can go wrong.
I have been using just a plain generic USB phone, made in China, that are detected as "Generic USB Audio Device" (no driver needed) for several years on all my computers and are quite happy with them.
Some of them I bought from Matrix for around R199.00 and some I got from Hi-fi Corp under the "Digitech" brand for around R150.00.
They work flawlessly, sound quality is good and does not sound "tinny" or cheap.
They look like this...
...and are labelled "Model Number AU-100"
I did try a similar type from C-Media, like this...
But the sound quality was crap.
If you can find that first kind anywhere... I give it my stamp of approval.
I have not tried many more expensive models because of the drivers issues and the complexity. I like to keep it simple.
