I'm thinking of buying a laptop and I want it to have tv-out. I'm not paying anything over R5000 for it so I don't want to spend more than I should. Anyways I can get a relatively good Fujitsu-Siemens notebook with notebook mouse and printer for about R4300, but the problem is it doesn't have tv-out.

As the title says, is there such a thing as a usb tv-out cable?

Any ideas on what I can do to provide tv-out for a laptop without it? It's a necessity that it should have tv-out.

I thank you very plenty :D

ciao.

So there's no such cable? that sucks,

Thanks swordfish, I checked out the same thing when thinking about the workarounds. Well at least I saw a laptop at sybaritic with tv-out for just over R5000 so I guess I'll go with my initial hunch and buy that.

yep, I guess it is a better option

if the tv-out is build in, it will work out of the box, if you use some external sort of attachment, it will require some special software to make it work which certainly will be a pain to some extent

keep in mind that most laptops come with s-video only, so if you want to connect it to a composite target (most old and cheap tvs), can be a problem as well

If only sybaritic's site worked I could have given you a link, but it is built in tv-out, so I don't think I'll have a problem.

yes but when they say tv-out, there are two types, s-video and composite, laptops usually have only s-video, which is the better quality one

most new equipment, like average and above average TVs, projectors etc, do have both types of input, so there is no problem at all, but old and/or cheap TVs, sometimes have only composite, and it can be a problem. Apparently you can get a cheapo s-video to composite conveter cable, but it produces black and white (well, grayscale rather) picture.

Thanks for the info swordfish, let's say my pc graphics card, is that tv-out composite or s-video, I'm currently holding a cable in my hand that has a tv-out connector at the front, and it as three other connectors at the end, a normal av type connector, one that looks like a mouse or keyboards ps2 port and the other one looks like the ps2 port that comes out of the motherboard.

What's that cable, will it work? I've hooked my desktop pc to my old outdated crap tv before with that cable.

your typical VGA VIVO card will look like this

two composite (the left and righ most) + two s-video (the middle ones)

your laptop will have s-video only, most likely

hope this helps

this won't work, it is a tv tunner, you can plug your aerial into it and watch tv on your laptop, but you can't watch your laptop onto your tv as it doesn't seem to have a tv-out (or video out)

Sorry for posting it, I found it out of desperation, I know it won't work. How much does a tv with s-video connector cost? I'm not looking at anything flashy, it could be a normal 54cm.

did you check your existing tv? as I said most newish or better brand TVs usually have s-video. Do you want the tv out only for using it on your home tv?

No, the laptop and everything will be used to present learning material to students on a tv or projector. It won't be for home use. I'm thinking at the moment that buying a tv would be the safest and best option, so when buying I'll just make sure it has s-video.

So it's nothing funny that most new tv's would have s-video today?

I wouldnt waste ur time with s-video, quality is pretty crappy. Rather get urself a 17" lcd and use the additional VGA output from the Notebook. If u only need 54cm then 17" would be ur best bet.

That's just too small, but thanks dabouncer, they say s-video quality is much better than composite, and I've had my desktop pc connected to a projector and played games on it in my living room and on the tv. I didn't find composite that horrendous when using it, so I think s-video is the safest. It's basically a large table and the tv sits at the end. These people need to see what's going on, on the screen. So LCD or any type of monitor is unfortunately out of the question.

this circuit is what most of the ati radeon cards use ...they tend to output svideo, and come bundled with a little convertor cable.

so if you can find someone with a radeon like that, you can just nick the cable off them when they are not looking.

or just make one yourself, or get your local tv repairshop to make you one for a couple of rand...it is about as basic as what you can get, easy peasy to make

Thanks werner, it makes sense reading why people get black and white picture only, I must say you are an idiot if you didn't figure out both devices had to use the same standard. lol

I think I'll buy the laptop with s-video and a s-video compliant tv. Thanks for the help swordfish and others! :)
