Hi Guys

I have a sudden problem with my desktop pc, after plugging a friends external HDD into my pc all the USB drives were downgraded from USB2 to USB1.

Ive tried formatting my PC (without any success) so I suspect that the damage is permanent? this problem is applicable to ALL the usb drives on my PC what ever usb device i try to connect. (I get the standard message "this device can perform faster if connected to a USB2 device...)

Has anyone ever experienced a similar problem? Possible suggestions to a fix?

Yes, it's most likely a driver issue. All ports will do the same as they run off one USB hub controller. Search for the appropriate drivers for your motherboard and you should be back in business.

If the drivers doesn't fix the issue, then you might want to update/reset your BIOS.

I have 2 pc's with same problem - motherboard 'southbridge' chip is damaged. You may want to try unplugging pc from power source for 24 hours. This can be a short-term fix as it allows caps to discharge & fool southbridge ic into working for a while. Best of luck....

Otherwise you can go into your BIOS and look for USB settings. There's an option for legacy support. Try disabling this if it is on Auto or Enabled.

I've had that problem before with a laptop and that solved it but otherwise your southbridge might be damaged.
