Hi,

How well will it work to power the Transend USB3 StoreJet external HDD from a USB AC charger instead of using a second USB port for this purpose?

Thanks,

Well, depends on the voltage. It can be overloaded by PC port drawing power, work as a team with PC power supply (what you expect), or not supply sufficient current to the hard drive. In the later case, it can still help, as not all problems are related to the static power, but dynamic load interfering data transmission.

Edit: Regulator can lose stability, oscilating when pumping current in (instead of out), your risk.

That any more risky than plugging your extenal hdd into some unknown computer?

I have come across a few "sleepy" power supplies, and a few "hot" ones as well.

Also just spent 45 minutes copying audio files to a USB3 Transcend HDD ... , connected to a USB1.1 ports ...

Yip, if you can get PCI USB3 cards. There are no such cards for the reason that USB3 would exceed EDIT: (PCI) bandwith. If you give up searching, USB 2.0 card is not the best, but at least works faster. Stay away from VIA chips, I have one. Get a card with NEC chip and internal molex power connector.

Okay, that will be better, thanks, will check the spec of a few USB chargers/powersupplies as well.

Just get right card with Molex power plug on the card. PC power supply is strong more than enough, it will do the job.
