Really enjoy using gmail, but i dont want to look cheap :p so have decided to make use of a domain i own. Whats the best way to do this?

Google Apps

And its not cheap to use gmail anymore. I'm surprised & glad public perception of gmail in business has changed. I use gamil for all my email but currently setup forwarders on my domains CPANEL to manage mine. Already switched wife business domain to Google Apps and going to switch my domain tonight now.

Is it better to set up google apps instead of just having it forward like >this

what are the advantages of google apps?

I've been using my domain's email account with Google Apps and Gmail as my primary email client for free for the past 6 months, works great.

Setting up google apps as your email host requires you to change your MX records to googles. If your hosting provider bills you for email forwarding or is unreliable, then this is the better option. Also if your hosting provider has email spam filters in place then they, not google, do this for you and this can at times this can cause problems when a known sender accidently gets flagged as a spammer.

Also you then get to log onto google with [email protected] - looks so much ubber kooler

sweet, will i get access to google labs? Will i be able to make us of multiple email accounts in gmail?

You can create as many email accounts in google apps as what your instance allows you (think the new limit is 10 on the free version?).
And google labs is available in google apps.

By this I assume you mean cheap as in perception, not cheap as in money?

I've been using GAFYD for over a year now, and love it. The new multi-login feature also makes it easier to swop between my personal and Google Apps accounts...

Register domain with a domain registrar, set up DNS for said domain, apply for Googleapps free, once DNS has propagated add googleapps MX records as per their instructions, wait and bingo, done

I'm running 5 different Googleapps domains,added the 5th 2 weeks ago,took an hour :)

lots of DNS changes needed, about 20 - 30 for all services, and a new one when creating sub domains, it takes forever to update my zone files, dont ask why, any ISPs out there in SA where i can change my own zone files

Just make sure Google Apps are still free, they stopped the Free service recently [or in the near future] . So you most likely will be paying for Google Apps.

So if you don't want to pay, then your best option is to set up mail forwarding from your domain registar. You can then set up in Gmail to have multiple identities aka "send as" linked to your domain after you have authenticated etc.

Obviously the more seamless way is Google Apps.

Incorrect, they just reduced the amount of Accounts per Free Googleapps domain to 10

They still free, but free account can only create 10 emails with your domain.

I'm using gmail apps with most of my domains and some of my clients also request this... and it works perfectly, seamless integration with outlook, limited to imap though, pop us a bit more tricky... But I love google email for business.

Mail is never down, unless your internet connection is down, but if you've integrated it with Outlook, it shouldnt really be a problem, I guess you can download Gears as well. But I hardly use outlook, the blackberry and online gmail works fine and mails arrive in your inbox at the speed of light. It's also fun using Labs.

The downside is, if you do bulk mailing, you'll only be allowed to mail 500 mails in a certain time period (I think it's per day). But for most of us, that shouldnt be a problem.

I havent really had a look at the other offerings, but for reliable, normal email usage, I'd go with apps.

And it's as easy as validating your domain with a mx record or something. Very easy.

Youre also not allowed to add more than 5 other pop email accounts to one gmail account. A bit annoying though. But I do understand the strain their servers would have to endure if it was more..

@OP - Mr Feesh, do you want to use it for SERIOUS business or just normal usage? If it's for normal usage (fun), I'd just add the account to my current gmail address ( for sending and receiving ), in settings. If it's for serious business I'd go with apps, Im sure it's still free.
