Just was thinking: will be possible to use the 24" iMac display as an external display (i.e. connect to my Windows Notebook's DVI/VGA port??

I am planning to keep the iMac home but use my notebook as my mobile unit; but in case I need to cnnect my notebook to the wider screen, could I use the iMac screen?

sorry to be so doff, what is VNC mode ("Virtual Network Computing") and how would i set this up?

That sounds intersting, i did not know that?

that really seems like a silly thing to do with a 24" iMac? 17k for 24" display?

google is a cool tool.
VNC basically is screen sharing. IE someone can control your machine or u theirs remotely. It is standard in leopard via the screen sharing option, which can be setup under sys prefs/sharing/screen sharing.

To screen share a windows machine use a free app like CoRD?

Well, if you connect the two together with an ethernet cable or even if they are on the same wireless network, you can download a VNC server on the laptop, and a VNC viewer on the iMac (Leopard has this built in)

I assume you are running Mac on the iMac and not Windows via bootcamp, so:

Connect the two via ethernet cable (or if they are on the same wireless network then that's fine)

On Windows:

Download tightVNC for the Windows laptop

Click Launch VNC Server in the TightVNC Menu in, Start > All Programs

Double click the TightVNC icon in the taskbar (next to the clock) and tick "Accept Socket Connections" and choose yourself a password.

Also, go to the "Socks" tab and check "Poll Full Screen" - This allows for a faster refresh apparently

Click "Apply" and then "Ok", and hover your mouse over the tightVNC icon in the taskbar. It should give you an IP address.. Take note of this address (e.g 10.0.0.12)

On Mac:

While in Finder, press the Command key+k on your keyboard. This will bring up the Connect to Server window.

Input vnc://computername or vnc://ipaddress where computername (or ipaddress) is the name (or address) of the VNC server you wish to connect to. If the server is using another port besides the default (5900), add a colon and the port number after the computer name (or address).

e.g vnc://10.0.0.12

Click the Connect button.

Enter your password, when prompted.

Let me know how it goes

Just make sure Screen sharing has been enabled under System Preferences - Sharing.

cool thanks,

PS: I am planning t buy a 24" screen and a Mac (not decided if notebook or iMac); I already have Windows notebook that my company gave me (12.1" Acer TravelMate), which haul around to office and back; but while i am home I wish to use Mac OSX and larger screen.
