Useage stats help.

My Tiscali ADSL account at the office is used by about 4 people.
Over the last month there has been some unusual usage.
On about 4 days the upload have been around 160 to 300MB with downloads around the usual 50MB.
The nature of our business does not require the sending of huge amounts of data.

Could there be anything strange on the go? Maybe a virus on one of the PC's?

The router in this case is the standard Telkom supplied Marconi unit.

I also have a Web Africa account running at home on a Netgear router which also seems to have unusually high traffic for the odd bit of internet stuff we do from there. What are the best security settings that one can use in these routers to prevent unauthorised access?

I once got a trojan (installed itself), it connected my PC to an IRC server and listed all my files on the ready for downloading....they managed to download 2gb before i noticed. Best you check it out!

Are you using Windows machines - if so is the automatic software update activated. That could explain the sudden jump.

I would also suggest you download and use this software and check for illegal use indicated by more than one concurrent connection - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=24500

Alos get spybot and/or adaware and check for other junk on the machines. This can explain a large usage but it would tend to be consistent rather than a peak
