Used car - kilometers

Hi

I'm in need to buy a "new" secondhand car. How do I determine how much kilometers is to much?

My VW Polo 1.6i Classic now has 105000km on it and the clutch is gone. So on a 70000km car it might go in a year again and cost me R11k.

Also any ideas on a new car? I need a bit more power than my current 74kw. R150 000 - R175 000

Tx

Depends on the car - I wouldn't but anything with a max of 10,000km per year.

BTW - my clutch went at 110,000km on the S2000

And the Hilux at 135,000km - both went one month appart from each other :(

I always thought 20,000km average.

I bought my 'new' secondhand car with 40,000km on the clock, which sounded excessive. But when looking closer, it is March 2008 and done about 2,000km per month - which is OK by me.

Ex Rental cars are always worth looking at, and they are all traded in at 30 000 or one year.

Despite being driven by 10 million idiots, they are at least very well maintained, and you can guarantee that they have had all teething niggles sorted out by Avis/Eurocar etc. before you lay your eyes on them.

That aside, "Book" prices are based on a 20 000/year average, so you can play around with that figure in mind.

Thanks for all the quick replies.

Frazda, where would I be able to see the secondhand "Rentals". I think my current car was one but I bought it from VW.

Second hand rentals are usually offloaded on companies like Auto Pedigree...VW's often end up back with Mastercars when they are looking for decent stock, but AP will give you the widest range to choose from.

With the excess on rentals - I've always been gentle on 'em.

Rental or not, you don't really know what you're buying.

Should I be scared of buying a car from a specific region? Say like Lenasia :)

As I said above...I have no trouble with rentals at all...they may have been driven by a bunch of palookas, but they are maintained far better than the average used car that you will come across....they also have their mileage put on very quickly, so the motors are usually as strong as hell.

RENTALS ROCK!! :D

Yep depends...when I bought my car my specifcations were, red, 2 door, 147, new engine, low km's...low and behold...found a red one, 2 doors, 57000kms with an engine that was replaced at 50 000kms...so low can mean different to most people...some would not look at a car with a new engine, meaning it broke before and why.To me low is below 80 000kms...

Buy what you like, you had VW, go for Audi and VW polow or something...

My first financed car was a Mastercar - VW Golf 4, I discovered after about a year that it was in a bad accident - back axle was still cracked.
