I have a number of other Apple devices so in order complete the circle -- and see how they all interact I was thinking of a used / previously owned machine

Which model is still "modern" enough to be useful -- ie most recent iOS and interoperability ?
and
Still affordable on a tight budget

I though a 6S might be a good place to start ?

Any thoughts ideas what model I should be looking at // any tricks traps and gotchas with an older phone ?

Thanks

Depends on features and number years use u want (well support with latest iOS, after removal of support.. apps will stop being produced slowly but surely for it.. typically 6-18months before it deaded)

iPhone 5S - 64bit & still supported but into it's final year of support.

iPhone SE - Likely 2nd last year of support hence a new version/iteration will be released this year.

iPhone 6/6 Plus - new form factors (3 yrs support left)

iPhone 6S/6S Plus - if u want 3d touch, last one with headphones (4 yrs support left)

iPhone 7/7 Plus - if you want the 1st iteration of dual lens pics (plus) (5yrs support left)

Yup.. once u go plus u can't go back :crylaugh:

New IOS updates are currently available for iPhones back to the 5S, so basically four years. From next year, the 5S will get stuck on IOS11 and the 6 will be the oldest model that will be able to run the latest OS. In 2020 it'll be the 6S, and so it goes.

Starting at the 6S or the 7 is not a bad option.

Tips? A new battery, if you need it, isn't too expensive, but check that the phone charges without issue. Having to get a new battery and a dock connector changes the value proposition for buying the phone.

Tip.. if he gets the 6S/Plus, he can get the battery upgrade for cheap from iStore. (tho iFix costs the same i think)

6S should be a safe bet and will be supported at least until iOS 13 I reckon.

5S and 6 will be on the chopping block now and not receive more updates.

Dock Connector ?

Standard 6S looks good fine for me ( 6SPlus too big )

I see these going for incredible prices on eBay -- R2,000.00 or less

Any idea where I can get one at that sort of price ?

The dock connector is the port you plug your USB cable in to charge the phone. Also used to connect to speakers and so on... I've never had one fail, but they can.

I would also say look at the 6s or SE nothing older. If you can, also get one with more than 16 GB storage, having only 16 GB storage will be a constant struggle.
