Decided to get a Virgin sim for data, but now I wonder why I even bothered. Initially called their call centre and was told that I could order the access pack from them, pay by credit card and have it delivered to me within 72 hours. Only the 72 hours didn't quite hold up, after the sim supposedly being "lost by the courier", then "left behind in the distribution room", and countless emails and phone calls it finally arrived, SIXTEEN DAYS LATER!! Of course to be able to activate the sim card and use it would just be too easy, so of course when I tried I was told it was not possible to activate the sim and that "my account was suspended". Never mind that its a prepaid sim. So for the last 2 days I've been trying to get them to actually activate it, no joy yet. Can't even dial customer service from my Virgin sim so I have to call from my Vodacom sim, just gave up now after more than 10 minutes on hold. Really expected Virgin to have better service than the other operators, but never experienced something even close to this bad with Voda or MTN before. So what's going on?

I had a similar problem when i started.

try this: dial *124*1*mobile number# and then press call.

tell me if it works

I had the same 'Suspended' problem. Nothing worked. Turns out that the branch where I purchased the starter pack (Musica Menlyn) had not loaded my details onto the system and thus the service had never been activated! It took a visit to another branch (Musica Fourways) and a few hours to determine this and then to load and activate the service! It all comes down to the new RICA act - none of the SIMs are pre-activated as it has been for pre-paid in the past with the other operators. They have to know who you are before anything can happen! If they don't do the activation correctly (or at all) then you sit with an unusable SIM.

Thanks, found after sending enough angry emails to customer care you get "escalated" and then they actually try and sort out the problem. They're still trying though...

Aren't Voda, MTN etc still selling pre-activated R2 sims? Haven't noticed lately?

You can still buy Pre-Activated MTN, Vodacom and Cell-C sims. Don't know when they are going to stop selling them.

I bought a Vodacom Prepaid sim a few weeks ago to use for HSDPA. When I phoned to get my Data activated they asked me all my details.

Ok thought so. Guess with Virgin launching in the shadow of the upcoming law it makes sense just to get everything upfront and save themselves the issues the other operators'll face later.

3g Sim

I must agree that Virgin is not living up to its promises.
I have phoned to try and get a new SIM for my MTN data card.
You get very helpfull operaters but they have to pass it on to the DATA Guys. This is where the problem lies.
This is the 1st time in a long time I am using my VM card, because I have to change SIMs in my phone.

I've been having connection problems with VM ever since they started.
So I took a break from them and gave them a month to sort it out. Still the same. I am still experiencing the same problems with connection i.e. it doesnt connect well at busy times like after 8pm .
So I am back on MTN for another 30 days and paying now about 44c/MB for my 350 mb data bundle this month.

My advice: If you want reliablity combined with Prepaid flexibility and need to connect when YOU need to connect then MTN is the way to go.

I am still waiting for my 128k sim, I think my patience ran out.No update on this issue Piesang?Thanx

eh?
How are you achieving that?
Last I looked MTN's 350MB bundle cost R220 which equates to 63c/MB

Shoprite sells the R180 MTn recharge for R168.99
This month MTN gives 30% more. So you get R234
In effect then R220 cost you R154.99

R154.99/350mB= 44c/MB

Ah I see..
Wasn't aware that Shoprite sold it cheaper - thanks for the headups :)

Was also not aware of the 30% more .. whats that about? Just this month?
