Hi

Not sure if this has been asked in a previous thread.
I've got a Vodafone Hyawei E272 3G modem. Will I be able to use it in the UK, in other words can I buy a sim in London and load a data bundle for mobile internet access in the UK.
Will it work throughout the UK like Scotland and so on?
And also do I need to provide proof of residence and ID or any crap like that when buying a sim in the UK?
I need this for work.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tinus

I did exactly that, bought two Vodafone SIMS and off I went. Had to phone the helpline to get some settings (APN, etc) but used it all over England and Scotland.

When I was there two years ago they charged GBP1 for 15MB (per day, if used), and then GBP1 per 1MB thereafter, that's why I had two SIMs. It may be cheaper now.

So it wasn't cheap, but still a lot less than roaming.

Some of the other ISP's have much cheaper bundles that come with a locked modem, may be a better solution if you want lots of data - but I didn't think that those would work in the remote areas of Scotland that we went to. Vodafone worked everywhere, but on the Isle of Skye it was only Edge.

They don't have this RICA BS there, not as far as I can remember anyhow.

You can do that. You may however need use a generic dash like Mobile Partner or MDMA.

Thanks for the reply Jola and Morkhans. GBP1 for 15MB is bloody expensive, when did you went there? If this is the case i might just as well get like you said a locked modem with a big data bundle. I only want to use it for email but some mails are big and I get a lot of mails daily.

Some of the bundles with locked modems are pretty cheap, but they don't have the same coverage accross the UK - so it depends on where you go.

Something like this may be a better option : https://www.three.co.uk/phones/sim_only?ID=1184

Edit : To put things in perspective, locally Vodacom charges GBP 2.75 for 15MB OOB.

I just used the Vodafone dash from the Vodafone UK website.

It will most likely only work with a Vodafone SIM, there are other providers in the UK as well. Hence my suggestion.

Sure. Personally I find the Cell C dash (customized Mobile Partner) very nice, because it has a facility for USSD commands.

I will probably just use this in future for everything.

I see theres a deal from Vodafone for GBP25 for the dongle and it includes 3GB data. This will be ideal for the 2 weeks for me. So vodafone's coverage is good?

Have you also considered picking up wifi hotspots instead?

I was in Ireland earlier this year and was going to get 3G but found that it wasn't necessary as I could get wifi access in most places for free.

Edit: Just had a look at "free wifi united kingdom" and note that McDonald's has free WiFi. Supersize that!

Tried this in the UK, but they charged for Wifi just about everywhere, and it was pretty expensive. Gave up on that one.
