Using big data for business

I will put my neck out and say that "big data" is a useless concept for 95% of companies.

They do not actually know WHAT they would like to get analysed or how to get there.

A solution looking for a problem?

Before using a tool to fix a problem, one needs to identify the problem, then to define a solution or two, then implement the solution, then if the tool is part of that solution to make use of it. Too many times is step 3 taken without the first two.

Pretty much that... its a cool toy so ppl want to use it rather than needing it for something

Chasing big data can be a total waste if not applied properly. However, even if you have a simple tool with the ability to order a data set which includes fields like "first contact date", "first demo date", "size of company" etc.; then you gain control over powerful information that can drive informed decisions. I do think that is valuable for more than 5% of companies ;) Knowing what goes on in your business on different levels, and having useful metrics is invaluable.

Most SA companies would do better with a crash course in excel. Id wager few companies in SA even have enough data to qualify.

Pretty sure that thing you've got there is called SQL database not big data. :p

That is a relatively basic relational db you're talking about there... not big data at all...

But if they do collect it over 10 years and then finally figure out what they want to do with it, they can (if it is the third full moon after the summer solstice and a rooster crowed at midnight twice....in other words they collected the right data in that 10 years)

Yeah, lots of ifs involved, as well as the assumption that they know what intelligence they would like to glean from the data and what type of business case it would have.
