I like my garmin.........guess the add whould have bothered me if i bothered to turn on the radio....put I prefer to listen to my podcasts while driving

I use Garmin Mobile XT on my Omnia, so I guess that's one for Garmin.

You just need to use a bit of common sense when using any GPS receiver, especially when it wants to route you through dodgy areas. But, it has always got me where I've wanted to. As matter of fact, on the weekend I missed a turning to a place that I've been to many times previously (duh) . So, I just loaded up the Garmin on my phone, and it brought me back on track.

Previously I would use a map, usually find my destination, and work out my route in reverse, from destination to start, and then switch it around when navigating. That worked for me. I have also used Brabys and other online mapping services, but they also have had some bizarre routes, including once up a street that didn't exist... (That was from a CD with mapping software)

I think the poll is a bit ambiguous. To me the above would fall into mobile phone with GPS because it is not a GARMIN GPS Navigator unit.

True, I voted for the "Mobile phone for GPS option", but it would be nice to specify which mapping software you use. I imagine that I could use something else besides Garmin, but I am happy with it so far.

If you Google a bit, you'll be amazed at how many things you can find for TomTom GPS's and phone software. Garmin locks you down waaaay to much.

A little history about both from Wikipedia:

Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), incorporated in George Town, Cayman Islands, is the parent company of a group of companies founded in 1989 by Gary Burrell and Min Kao (hence the name GarMin), that develops consumer, aviation, and marine technologies for the Global Positioning System. Its subsidiary Garmin International, Inc. serves as headquarters for the Garmin Limited companies and is located in Olathe, Kansas, which is located in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The largest operating subsidiary and primary production facility of Garmin Limited is Garmin (Asia) Corporation (Chinese: 台灣國際航電股份有限公司), located in Sijhih City, Taiwan, a suburb of Taipei.

TomTom NV (Euronext: TOM2) is a Dutch manufacturer of automotive navigation systems, including both stand-alone units and software for personal digital assistants, and mobile telephones. It is the leading manufacturer of navigation systems in Europe.[2] TomTom's customer service is located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

In 2008, TomTom acquired Tele Atlas, a digital map maker, for €2.9 billion.

Garmin Nuvi 205 included in some MTN Anytime contracts as per their latest deal sheets:

  • R119 x 24 months.
  • R100 airtime per month.
  • Free phone (I think it was 2 Samsung phones that had this combo).
  • Free Garmin Nuvi 205.

Good deal I think.

I hope that Google's GPS would make this pain of finding a shop go all away. My Garmin didn't find any shop in Koeberg road... Would TomTop have helped? I doubt it.
