Using iburst with low signal

Makedon - external UTD antenna did the trick for me there.

Iburst UTC Antennas DO exist ... doubt if they have stock though.

Kei's right about the power of utd vs utc ...

As a good base indicator:
IGNORE LIGHTS on unit
KEEP a close eye on frame error rates

If those erorr rates are excessive try different position or antenna ... nothing else will really help if you have *** RF.

Half-truths and urban legend... WTF?

what i mean by that is when i first heard about mtu and rwin i knew nothing about it. it seemed that oppinions were cut in half with regards to the effectivenes of mtu with iburst.

i decided to educate myself and find out exactly what mtu is all about... and start playing with values. Granted there are a thousand other factors that are going to play huge roles with net speeds.

but experimenting one weekend after a fresh install of win XP sp2 on a day when the iburst network seemed more a less normal i had some suprising results.

i dont think mtu is the holy grail by far... and certainly not the wonder fix wbs helpdesk seem to rely on so much, but in the realm of twekaing a good connection to make it better there is certainly some value in it.

in the case of dismal frame error rate mtu won't help significantly.

i had a case where one day i started recieving fre rates well over 10% which obvioulsy caused bad speeds... eventually i phoned a technician (not helpdesk) who explained that they actually working on my tower and things should come right in a while. suprisingly this was the case.

so yeah... half truths... urban legend is sometimes what happens and needless to say these were started by wbs helpdesk staff and simply propagated by iburst users.

fergus, i have the desktop if you wanna swop it for the pcmcia card
No thanks, I need to be portable. Try trading it in with wbs for a UTC.

One can use an external antennae on the UTC [pcmcia card], look on the side of the card there is a plastic cap, open it and plug in a pig tail.
I thought thats what the plastic thing was for. Ta.
