Using open source to turning users into criminals

And then the USA wonders why the rest of the world hates them. Yet another shining example of American stupidity. Granted this is not yet an official proposal by the sounds of it, just a bunch of dumb yank rednecks lobbying for it to happen.

The reason why they doing this is because US software giants, MS, Symantec, and whoever else are losing valuable income and as a result so is the US government. It has nothing to do with capitalism, it's about lining some douches back pocket. As it always is! People love to go on these holy crusades to right the world of so many wrongs, but all they are really doing under the disguise is making life better for themselves by means of making themselves richer, fatter, happier, warmer etc.

That is just crazy. Open Source is intellectual property that the programmer chose to share...

That is the biggest load of bull I have ever heard I am using both open source and propriety software in a government enviroment, and let me tell you that the open source software is 8 out 10 times better than propriety software. Maybe if they weren't so money hungry they wouldn't complain so much. Long live open source

Fair comment - I suppose it's the fact that crap like this even gets consideration in a society which was founded on freedom which causes me to question where they're going.

I think its disgusting that someone can turn around and label an entire country terrorist for using open source. It's that argument of we pirate software, then to make money developers increase price on software, promoting more piracy, its a vicious circle. You want to lower piracy, drop prices enough that lay man can afford it, and sell more. Who here doesnt like owning a nice disk thats been printed and you can say, "hell, check my original collection" ?

the world runs on backhand deals. Hard to find a decent business running a clean operation.

A thought occurs. Are they going to close down google now? They do not charge. Maybe Bing! (puke) can charge then.

Are they completely insane? If open source is anti-capitalism, Steve Jobs must be the biggest communist of them all. MacOS X and iPhone OS are based on Darwin OS, which is (surprise surprise) open source. Maybe while the US is at it, they should also ban Google, HTC and Nokia for using open source OSs on some of their phones.

Anyone know what the current market share of open source-based servers is?

this is actually quite funny. reading this leads me to believe that being on the list is no biggy though

Robber Barons like Bill Gates still whining about not getting their share of the wealth on this planet. It is pretty clear that most of the World's problems are the result of a few people who hoard software and intellectual property.,

And let's not forget Steve Jobs. He is far worse than Bill Gates. At least Gates gave away some of his wealth to fight maleria, TB and AIDS.

lol... I don`t think South African govt. would even mind being labeled anti-capitalist, the politicians even use it as an insult during speeches.

How do these people sleep at night?

I'm trying to think when last I used pirated software? Oh yes, before I switched to Linux.

Apparently not stealing something because you don't have a use for it is as bad as stealing now. You can't win.

They're basically labeling open source developers and users as if they were terrorists or drug dealers when in actual fact they're the ones who want a world where unless you can pay for something you don't get to do anything.

We will always have quality software whether we have to pay for it or not because the best programmers would program if you kept them locked in a room on a diet of bread and water. If they can make a living while providing "free" software so much the better.

actually, that would be bread and coffee, thankyou.. throw away the key.

Unfortunately, Big Business seems to be running the show in the US instead of the government. DMCA has always been a mess ( even after 10 years ), MPAA/RIAA keep trotting out B.S. stats about p2p/file sharing + suing their customers and the US government wants to shaft the rest of the world with ATCA ( backed by Big Business once again ) ... In a few years time, I think there will be the USA and everyone else. And the USA will become a footnote in history. They haven't developed/manufactured a product worth anything in the last 30 years, they don't have any tech skills and they they've just brought the world's finances to a halt.

LOL!!! U S A ! U S A! everyone start clapping or they will shoot!

Invade us like I-raq or Afghanistan!

/ducks for cover

WTF are these guys smoking???

Their stinky socks?

Whatever happened to freedom of choice???? So much for the vaunted American "democracy".

Choice ends where their luxurious lifestyles, founded on the exorbitant and expensive price tag, is threatened ;)

How do these people sleep at night?

Oh! That's easy! The sleep on king-sized four poster beds with cute, cuddly goose feather duvets, etc. All of which is funded by those happy to pay their price tag :(

On the flip side, I actually enjoyed reading this article. I thought it was hilarious, bordering on insanely humorous. None of the thoughts proposed by those daffy lobbyists are anything more than thoughts spawned from acute indigestion :p
