Hi,

Can someone please help me? I have recently setup two mobile phones to act as modems for laptops on MTN. One was a Samsung and one was an iMate Jamin. I managed to get both to work, but only connecting via GPRS, which is painfully slow even-though both devices are 3G capable and enabled.

My Nokia with CellC happily connects via EDGE and the connection is quite snappy.

Do I have to use a different setting in the DUN setting to connect via 3G? Or are there additional settings on the phone that need fiddling with?

Any help much appreciated.

Did you come right as I'm trying to achieve something similar?

Hi Meisteral,

What I have been able to figure out so far is that when you connect to the internet using a mobile phone as a modem is that it will generally connect at the fastest speed available. The GPRS setting supplied by your vendor will suffice for GPRS / EDGE / 3G / HSPDA.

I have also purchased additional SIM cards for MTN and Virgin (I am on Cell-C) to play with them also. I have not tried Voda.

What is interesting is Cell-C and Virgin have reciprocal agreements with Voda, so you can use their 3G network. To do this you have two options, the first is to manually select their network on the phone and the second is to change your network mode from 'dual mode' to 'UMTS', and if the 3G service is available from another operator (Voda or similar) then it will be used.

This is all very cool. But what I have not been able to establish as yet is if the 50c per MB data rate from Virgin (or similar) is still applicable if you are using the Voda 3G network. This is not documented anywhere on any of their web-sites as far as I can tell.

Apparently though, Voda will de-prioritise data to other networks when there is a load on their network, so you may experience slower speeds than a Voda customer on the same network using another provider.

If you need more specific help with phone or modem settings then PM me, or, Google is your friend ;-)

using phone as 3g modem

Hi I just got a 3g phone on mtn contract and I'm using it as a modem. What is the rate per mb and are there any additional data bundles I can buy for it?
