Using Vodafone modems on other networks

As far as I know, the networks are not allowed to lock any device any more. So if it doesn't work, then the frequencies might not be supported. Just Google 8ta frequencies and compare it to the frequencies of the modem

If i POP in the 8TA Sim the modems turns blue flickering LED ..... does that mean its not locked? How to connect from there?
Your modem is good for 3G Vodacom, MTN and 8ta, but not for Cell C. Flashing blue means it had been registered in 3G network.
So far is OK. Now you need to unload Vodafone software from memory (including systray) and dial Windows dialup connection created by Vodafone software, or download MDMA. When blue light turns steady blue, your connection is active.

I don't have any Vodafone software installed on my PC at all. So where can I download MDMA? Will I need to configure MDMA to dial specific settings and connect with it to my carrier?

If you don't have Vodafone software installed, there is a possibility that drivers are not installed. Do you see modem device and User Interface port installed in Device Manager? MDMA needs drivers. Download link in sticky section.

Okay Guys so help me if I have this right?

The fact that when I insert my 8TA Sim into my K3570-Z Vodafone Modem and it has the dark Blue LED Flickering means I should be able to use the Modem With 8TA sim right? What the next steps to actually get it connected to the 8TA network? Drivers for Windows 7 x64? Do I install the Default Vodafone firmware on the Modem, then making sure it doesn't start up when I connect the modem and also remove the tray Icon and use MDMA to connect .... I am very stupid with this so please I would appreciate if someone can just set out the steps for me in order I need to do next to get my 8TA working on the K3570-Z modem. Much Appreciated :)

Use K3772-Z Vodacom dongle with Cell C

The quickest solution is to create the dial-up connection, as mentioned above. There are a few good explanations about that on this site.
Use *99# as the telephone number, as mentioned by Slab below :-)

I am now adding this a day or two after the section below. It is possible to get the Vodafone dongle and software working on the Cell C network, as described below but I have reverted to the dial-up installation again. I did not see any improvement when I used the Vodacom software and it was a lot of hassle to get it working.

I had some problems with the dial-up connection, probably due to my Windows 8 installation. I therefore wanted to use the Vodacom software with a Cell C sim card to see if I will get better connections. I just got my K3772-Z working with the Vodacom software and a Cell C sim card. I'll explain what I did. I'll try to add links to the right discussion threads and files.

I followed instructions from several threads on this website.

I uninstalled the Vodacom software that the K3772-Z dongle originally installed.
I removed the dongle from the PC.
I removed the sim card from the dongle
I restarted the PC and inserted the dongle again. I started the Vodacom software (VMB 10.2) installation again.
When the software asked me to select the country/service provider, I cancelled the installation. I now copied the file Opcos.xml file to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Broadband\Opco" as described in http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/363656-Using-Vodafone-modems-on-other-networks?p=7845885&viewfull=1#post7845885
You can also find the right Opcos.xml file in that thread or http://www.mediafire.com/download/dqt9wd3j3rr3k1o/Opcos.xml .

Unzip the following zip file to the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Broadband\Opco" folder
http://www.mediafire.com/download/ifza88h9z67b62t/

Restart the Vodacom installation software on the dongle. Select Cell C as the service provider. You should now be able to use the Vodacom software with the Cell C sim card. :)

hi guys, sorry to bring up an older thread but didn't wanna start a new one

i've got a Vodafone k4305 modem that i would like to use with a MR 3220 TP-Link router

has any1 had any experience with "hacking" this to work?

the k4305 installs differently to other modems, its dashboard is browser based and i think this is the cause of it not working on the router.

any ideas?

This is why it doesn't work. Search this forum for using HiLink modems on routers and how to disable Hilink and enable standard COM port modem interface.
This thread is for dealing with nasty Vodafone software installed on PC. HiLink doesn't install anything on PC.

Hi,

Do you guys have any advice if the Opcos.xml fix don't work with vmb 10.3 on a vodafone k5150 usb modem

Thanks in Advance

K5150 is a HiLink modem with Vodacon's own HiLink interface and I still haven't had much time to figure it out.

Hi all, How do I go about using a Cell C sim with the Vodafone Mobile WiFi R218h, please? Thanks so much.

I don't know Vodafone R218h, but in most (unlocked) cases all you need to do is creating a new dialup profile with username/password and APN empty, then make this profile default. All setting will be taken from SIM.

Vodafone K4505-z not working with Cell C SIM

Hello!

A buddy of mine has a Vodafone K4505-z modem. He bought a Cell C sim but now the Vodafone software says "SIM not recognised".

Any ideas?

Cheers

Rob

Anyone looking to use a new SIM on a restricted modem, search for a thread of Bhoza's on: Routers, new dial up profile, sim unlocking.
Good luck.
