Using Windows XP? Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 Support Ends April 8, 2014

MS has been saying this for at least five years, and each time the deadline moves along.

I still use XP in a virtualbox to run hardware with no linux drivers and software with no linux equivalents.
 
I doubt they'll extend it again. The previous extensions were really because of the lack of love for Vista.

One consequence for the end user is that newer software will not be tested or supported on XP. It may still work but if it doesn't, you'll get no love from MS or the developers.

+1 on Virtualbox. Excellent software.

That is the only real problem. After the support deadline MS will no longer release patches for vulnerabilities so its open season for hackers.
 
I assume most large companies have already migrated to Windows 7 so this should not be too much of an issue right? Or are there a lot of companies still on XP?
 
I'm still using XP on my work laptop. Maybe now is a good time to request an upgrade? But I don't want Windows 8.

You would be surprised how many are still running XP. We have informed our clients but they are all waiting to the last minute.

Funny thing is most of our smaller clients are on 7, but its not rare to find huge corporations still running Windows XP all over the place. And don't think its just because they running older PC's either. Just last week I had to reload a couple of new PC's with XP.

When you have XP machines which are continuing to do what you need them to do, I can understand the reluctance to spend money on an upgrade that doesn't really give you any added value.

In the field it is becoming more and more evident that the migration to Windows 7 is not the problem and its actually its those pesky apps being compatible with Windows 7/8 that is the key issue. Customers often underestimate how long it takes to test compatibility of applications from XP to 7 or even 8. These things can take ages and requires proper planning.

Quey_Quick, you more than likely understand my pain seeing as you are going through it yoursefl at the moment? Your thoughts/comments?
 
Most apps should be compatible by this time right? Software publishers have had ages to move things along!
 
If you have a network of xp machines which are not connected to the internet then there is little risk in staying with it, unless someone has a malicious flash drive etc. they plug in.

Agreed. Even if you do connect to the internet, isn't this where a good antivirus suite comes into it's own?
 
I've got a pc that has xp and an xp virtual machine. Think I should do a fresh install on both and then clone that install to be safe.
