UUnet ping times THIS high?

FireFli - I second your requirement.
Howz about we get sybawoods to make 20% of his connection available me and you now and then. That's all I need. I'll pay 25% of the price for Teklom 4GB unshaped to sybawoods.

latency of 2000 - 3000 ms. That's terrible. Am I misreading you? 2 - 3 second latency is just carp.

No you're not misreading me at all - there are times when normal shaped ADSL is that bad. Not all the time, but that's how bad it gets. Part of the problem is the unreliability - one day pings can be in an acceptable range (say 400-600ms), very next night it can be 2000-3000ms. Unshaped gives a much more predictable experience.

Well, at the moment with UUNet DNS resolution is failing quite often (though after a name has been resolved, access to a website is very quick), AIM/ICQ/MSN takes upwards of a minute to connect sometimes, and sometimes requires I retry, I am completely unable to do AIM video conferencing during the day (it frequently refuses to connect and only late at night can I get it going), IRC ping times on ZA networks are like 30-60 seconds (though interestingly enough a connection to undernet in miami florida, one of UUNet's dropoff points is around 300-400ms). UUNet's ADSL is still better than capped ADSL, but it is in no way, shape, or form, a competition for uncapped ADSL (shaped or not), at least not in the state it is at the moment, and frankly, I expect a hell of a lot more for the amount of money I'm paying... R714pm just for an account is not chump change.

Sounds like a plan. :p

during the day its really terrible, I agree with you all. RPM will see it as well from the testing which I did for him. Its improving during evening hours and its gets fantastic over the weekend. But at the moment its not worth the price I am paying.
UUNET needs to do a lot of improvement.

Fanstastic? I'd say its far from fantastic over weekends. Local pings over the past weekend was 190-300ms, but international was 600-1400ms though. and its very unstable with the lots of spikes. With Telkom I used to get 25-40ms locally and 700-1000ms internationally. During the week, international is 2000-3000ms and local is 300-1400. I can't even play Diablo2 LOCALLY!

Web browing is even suffering, sometimes I get time-outs and the other times it is 'looking for www.myadsl.com' for 5-10secs before it starts opening the page. But opening the page is rather quick.

Well since I can't game, I'm making up for the cash lost by downloading, but even that is starting to suffer. Locally I get around 30-40KB/s (384Kb/s) compared to Telkom of 45-55KB/s and internationally 20-30KB/s.

Who plays Diablo 2? People, move on, its been several years already :D

Starcraft : Ghost, now THATS where it's @

I used p2p over the weekend and I downloaded about 7 gb since saturday moring until monday morning.

Diabolo??? You still playing that? Whats about Doom3 and HL and CS???

A bit OT but:
I've already finished all the biggies such as FarCry, HL2, Doom3, LOTR:BFME etc. And all my MP goldies such as UT2004, Warcraft3 etc I now find very boring/stale. So I started digging back into all the oldies (abandonware), such as StarCon2, SystemShock2 and even certain Sierra & Lucasarts games. Nostalgia set in big time.

Then one day, while I was sorting out CD's I found my Diablo2 CD and thought it might be a good filler while I'm waiting for WoW to arrive. Now I'm totally hooked again... Sure GFX are a little dated, but the quality of the game still astounds me. It has awesome movies, good music and replayability deluxe!

Also what was nice about Diablo2 is that ping didn't matter whatsoever, but now with UUNET, its fubar. It takes 3-5secs just to pick-up an object within your inventory.

I hope they fix it soon!

Why not just get a copy of WoW now? I have been playing on the European servers since it's release their. :D

FireFli, how can u get WoW now? Unless you have d/l the Open Beta Client then you have to order from overseas, right?

I have seen normal 3 gig accounts with pings of 600ms to the BRAS most of yesterday and some of today. That means the ATM network from the DSLAM at the local exchange was stuffed, and that would likely affect UUnet accounts to. I dont know how wide spread this problem was, but it did affect some exchanges in Cape Town.

For ~R275 (£24.99) with box, manual and free delivery (via friend who going to visit UK), the answer is obvious. I also asked him to email me the cdkey ASAP, I should get it by next week.

Back on topic: I just reset my DNS on my router and in turn it seems that web browsing is a lot faster now and I'm not getting time-outs. Coincidence?
