Hi there. I recently got a Nokia 6320i and moved over to Vodacom. Initially I couldn't log on either with IrDA or Bluetooth. I sorted out the IrDA, seems the modem driver supplied by Nokia with the phone (PC suite CD) is faulty. I worked this out myself after hours of frustration and lots of trips to the mall.

No matter what I do, I can't get Bluetooth connection to work. It "connects", but then won't browse/load webpages. Someone told me I need to get an initialisation string from Nokia to enter in the Bluetooth modem settings. Trying to get this out of Vodacom 114 is like trying to pull teeth.

Can you help please, or tell me where to go to get help. I have been to the local Vodacom shop. They were very pleasant but completely clueless. And the local computer shop geek, he suggested the initialisation string thing. :)

Have you called 155?

PM me an e-mail addr. and I'll put you in contact with the correct people.

Bluetooth connection

Hi there

What you need to do is uninstall both the Nokia pc suit and the BT soft ware
then install the BT software first,Then the Nokia pc suit the reason for this is that when you install the Nokia pc suit it will automatically detect the BT software Strange but it works for me and most of my customers.

Maybe that line should have read:
There's also been a lot of hassles with SP2! :D :D

But bluetooth is high up on the list.....

Fenwick, have you installed SP2?

If so, try and use the MS drivers and not the native ones. Worked for me.

Bluetooth is far better with SP2 than it was before, unless you have some imitation mecer dongle or something like that.

The init string is:

Code:
+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"

Here is a guide to help

If you still cant get a working connection from PC Suite then try downloading BlueSoleil from www.bluesoleil.com latest version is 2.1.2 and try connecting using that. If it works then get PC Suite 6.70.22 and try connecting again. My bluetooth problems were sorted out this way..hope this helps.

Make sure pc suite is not using the generic windows drivers and the ones supplied with the dongle, i noticed when i installed my dongle that xp sp2 picked it up as a generic radio which pc suite would not work with so i forced it to use the drivers for my x-micro dongle. Once i did this in connection manager in pc suite i selected bluetooth (WIDCOMM) instead of bluetooth (MICROSOFT). Hope this helps, i have a nokia 6230.

Sorry, now I am going to show my ignorance. What is SP2? How/where do I install it.

Also for V3G, I tried 155 but only get automated information links; can't get through to a real person no matter how long I wait. Any suggestions.

By the way thanks everyone for your suggestions. I am going to work through them all and will let you know what works.

Sp2 is service pack 2. Just one big update for windows xp basically. You can get it delivered for free from microsofts website or jus download it. when u dial 155 i think you must press 0 and it puts u in line to speak to some1. It must be busy now thats why its taking so long.

Thanks. How exactly do I force pc suite to use the drivers for my dongle? I have a Toshiba bluetooth stack/dongle by the way.

What I did was loaded the correct (6230i) bluetooth modem driver from Windows XP Phone and Modem options, and then pc suite picked that up automatically and used it to try to connect but to no avail. (Interestingly when I did the same process for IrDA it also wouldn't connect or recognise the phone for GPRS use; this only got sorted out when I used a "standard driver for infrared" modem. To be honest I don't even know where this standard driver came from. Windows/PC suite, who knows? It was just there.)

Does pc suite give you 2 options : bluetooth (microsoft) and bluetooth(somethin else) when you want to connect? If so dont use the microsoft one.

common problem

Hi

The fact that you connect but no traffic implies that you are using wap access. You don't need the initialisation string if you set the phone proper :

on the phone go to settings, connectivity, gprs, gprs modem settings - make sure the access point is not the wap but the internet one.

As long as you use *99# as the dialup number you should be fine.

VodaGuy

Problem solved thanks

Thanks everyone and especially thanks Alchamy. All I had to do was install the initialisation number and all my problems disappeared.

So the question to be asked is
1. Why isn't the init number freely available from Vodacom?
2. How come the guys at the vodashop, who think they are fairly knowledgeable, can't do this (with their eyes closed; its not that difficult afterall.) I mean I really know nothing about computers (see above question on SP2) and I sorted it all out myself, with some help from this site.
3. Why is this whole process surrounded in such mystique? Can't Vodacom/Nokia etc make it all much more simple/intuitive?

Anyway once again thank heaven for MyADSL. Should have used someone elses internet connection and posed my questions here in the first place instead of going backwards and forwards to the vodashop/computer shop.:D

Thats my whole point. Its not that difficult!! If I can do it, anyone can. So why not the guys at the shop? After all I bought my phone/Bluetooth dongle and stack etc from the shop, so surely they should know how it all fits together.

Maybe I should move to KZN Southcoast?
