Vaal Dam levels

Barrage is downstream of the vaal dam. The vaal dam basically controls flow into it. They open the barrage gates so as not to flood all the holiday homes along the river between the dam and the barrage ;)

Makes perfect sense now... Thank you Sir!

Eish...we have a drought despite our Minister of Water Affairs and Sanitation's name being Nomvula (English translation is "After the rain"). ;)

She has delayed the next phase of the water from Lesotho by two years now.
Open tenderpreneurship
Widely published.

Ok, I am seriously missing something here. How much was spent on the the highlands water project? How much water is being delivered to the vaal dam currently?

about 27m^3 per sec comes out that tunnel...And is doing so.

Phase 2 was supposed to add another 28...

There is a drought, yes, but the dam levels are being used as propaganda to drive up prices and obfuscate other issues that contribute to supply problems etc.

Yip. I remember a drought in the 80's. Every little pan and farmers dam was gone. Now I see those sam ones full of water.

We have to ask the question though: how long did those pans take to fill up? The Vaal is probably over 9000 times bigger, so it will take a bit of time to fill up properly again. The current gauteng heat wave isn't helping either, as most people in Gauteng need to cool down a bit.

Its more about the quality - SA water in general is pretty polluted so they need the clean mountain water to dilute it.

It takes mining through the rocks with very special tunnel boring equipment.
It takes years to get the equipment and teams together for a job of this magnitude.
And it involves cooperation between countries.
And I don't think Lesotho loves us with all the meddling in their affairs.
And and and...
Whilst, in the meantime, locally we don't have enough water for our needs.
What a joke.

After flying over the dam on Thursday, the water levels definitely seem to have receded further since my earlier posts. The islands are definitely bigger now. This is approaching Deneysville from the north. The harbor is visible behind the boats

Joburg Water: Water supply shortage due to low Vaal Dam level

JOHANNESBURG – Joburg Water says several parts of the city are without supply due to the Vaal Dam levels decreasing weekly.

A number of areas including Northcliff and surrounds as well as some parts of the CBD have not had supply for several days now.

The utility says water levels at the Vaal Dam which mainly services Gauteng are currently sitting at below 27%.

Joburg Water says it’s working on supplying affected areas with water tankers.

Spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene says: “The problem with water supply is at its lowest because the Vaal Dam is very low, it’s at about 27%. It supplies four municipalities in Gauteng. We’re struggling with supply.”

At the same time, Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane says her department will release some water from the Sterkfontein Dam next week, to protect the 25% minimum level of the Vaal Dam.
