I know some extremely happy wealthy people. There's a big difference between someone who chases money and someone who has money. Not every person with a few rands extra is necessarily and ass, you know. Besides, if that is their personalities, so be it. You have your opinions and things that make you happy but those are not necessarily the same things that make others happy. R4000 sunglasses may make one person happy where a R4000 tire (Eish, I know...) might make someone else happy. Different strokes...

The rich judge the poor and the poor judge the rich. It's the same cycle, genreation after generation. What makes the one better than the other?

I don't think it's about who is better than whom. It's about a millionaire who are able to drive by a beggar in the street without so much as a second thought.

If you do not care for the fellow man in need, you could be conceived as shallow, cold and empty.

Reading blunomore's thread about oversea's travel and it being excessive, I'm just curious as to some other's people values on here.

Would you be prepared to spend the following because you love it - or feel it's waste even if you could afford it?

Overseas holiday R100,000.00 Yes :D
Hi Fi R70,000.00 yes :D
Dog/cat R9,000.00 hell no
Computer R20,000.00 maybe:D
Car R500,000.00 definitely :D
Cellphone R10,000.00 maybe
Lounge Suite R40,000.00 maybe
Sunglasses R4,000.00 hell no, R30 at the robots...

1. In our country, unless you're blind, it is very hard not to look around you and to notice that so many people have so much less.

2. A lot of people spend exorbitant amounts of money not necessarily because they want a particular item, but because it would impress someone else if they had it. That becomes a vicious circle, because you keep having to update these items for the sake of the Joneses'.

Man am I glad I don't live in JHB!

Does anybody know a wealthy person who is happy?

All the rich people I know are irritable, impossible to amuse, incredibly opinionated, have zero tolerance for everything, demand perfection in everything around them as if they are gods, continually critcize anything they can, pessimistic, arrogant, fundamentally dishonest, and, as a result, are really p!ss poor people.

The world, and all its hungry, illiterate, sick and hopeless millions of people are not really interested in your desire for a pair of R4,000 sunglasses. ("only if they're photochromic, polarized, unbreakable and completely match the basic, simplistic style I'm after.") - I rest my case.

Aint you a ray of sunshine?

It must be tough to get some privacy at your house, what with all the beggars you take home all the time?

A millionaire pays lots of tax. Of which a large proportion goes to welfare.

Blu, you seem to care a lot about what people do with their money. let people be. let them enjoy their money. if they are comfortable with their lifestyles then who are you to comment on their excessive spending?

let people be... some people help others in need and some don't. i you help out then good for you. if you can sleep at night because you help then good for you. but please let people be...

if they can sleep at night for being millinarirs and enjoying thier money then why should you worry?

yes i do. we all have our own problems. so you choose if you want to have money and still have problems or have no money and still have problems...

some people work hard for their money and i think they are entitled to do what they wish with their money. it's true that you cannot there are people suffering in the world. :D

it's people like you who are hypocrites, you often seem to caring but you don't, you are the type that was against the xenophobia but when the poor people were in those camps that were near suburbs you were the first to complain about the value of your property.... :p

You seem to misread.

I do not care what people do with their money vis a vis beggars or whatever else. I am not gonna hunt down people and try to "convert them" in order to give them a conscience.

I am merely giving you my OPINION. WE DO AGREE THAT I AM ENTITLED TO VOICE IT, RIGHT? RIGHT?

Call me the devil's advocate if you will. I dont mind helping out beggars, but I do mind holier-than-thou attitudes.

I have an opinion that we should help those less fortunate than us, and there are a lot of those people out there. If you think that is a holier-than-thou attitude, you're welcome to think so and have a nice day doing it :)

Actually my holier-than-thou quip was for you saying I have a cold heart when you know less than nothing about how I treat the needy in real life. And even if you knew, it was a quip you could only make if you were in fact spending your time/money helping the needy; hence my sarcastic comment I started off with.

I believe the needy should be helped(but only a little - thats another argument entirely though) but I do not believe you can go around calling people heartless ect if they dont subscribe to your version of how the world should work without expecting a little backlash.

Having said all of that, why dont you tell us all what % of your income you spend on the needy since it would be so heartless of you not to do so? :p

And I called you heartless because you asked me how many beggars I take home, thereby implying that I preach but do not act.

We are keeping a young man from Malawi at university, we created a job for him on our farm as the farm manager. On that same farm, we gave a piece of our land to illegal occupants instead of chasing them off like the previous owner tried to do. They do not have access to their own water, so we share our boreholes with them. We organised for their daughter to get a bursary to study nursing in Nelspruit.

A LOT OF PEOPLE ON THIS FORUM DO MUCH MUCH MORE THAN THIS, BUT this is not a competition and I could not give a flying **** what you do or do not do for people in need.

Your conscience, not mine.

very commendable and I'm glad there are people like you who care so much. I sometimes wish I could be more like you.

Except for the screaming at me part though.

Cat fight, cat fight! hehe!

Yeah, I don't see the problem in enjoying money that I've worked hard to earn. I don't give money to beggars often, I prefer to help the poor by employing a fairly large number of 'lower class' or blue collar workers. I am thereby helping these men (and women) support their families in a fair way. I can't give money to someone who keeps their child next to them on a sidewalk. I'm sorry.

Anyway, what I do whenever I need to buy something here in SA I always convert it to US$ and it doesn't seem nearly as bad. A good portion of my income is in US$ anyway.

Overseas holiday R100,000.00 ($10,000) Yeah, it better be good though.
Hi Fi R70,000.00 ($7,000) Bit pricey, but I love my music, so why not.
Dog/cat R9,000.00 ($900) Possibly. Top pedigree though.
Computer R20,000.00 ($2,000) Laptop, yes, PC, not a chance.
Car R500,000.00 ($50,000) Yeah, even $100,000.
Cellphone R10,000.00 ($1000) Sure, but get them for free on contracts.
Lounge Suite R40,000.00 ($4,000) Yes for the right home.
Sunglasses R4,000.00 ($400) Definitely.

Yeah.
