Reading blunomore's thread about oversea's travel and it being excessive, I'm just curious as to some other's people values on here.

Would you be prepared to spend the following because you love it - or feel it's waste even if you could afford it?

Dog/cat R9,000.00 - Once apon a time maybe, now that I have my own house to look after and yorkies mess everywhere, never.
Computer R20,000.00 - In the blink of an eye, just spent R15k on my latest rig
Car R500,000.00 - Depends on what it is and the utility value, if it was a prestine Ferrari Testarossa 1984 I wouldn't even think about it.

Lounge Suite R40,000.00 - Depending on what I have in the rest of my house, maybe

Overseas holiday R100,000.00 -> No
Hi Fi R70,000.00 -> No, maybe half that. 70k is overkill.
Dog/cat R9,000.00 -> No
Computer R20,000.00 -> Yes
Car R500,000.00 -> No, but I'd buy a R150 000 car, R100 000 bike and another R250 000 bike. ;)
Cellphone R10,000.00 -> No
Lounge Suite R40,000.00 -> Probably
Sunglasses R4,000.00 -> No

The way I look at things is, anything that will make my daily life better, I will spend on. Everything else is pretty pointless.

1. In our country, unless you're blind, it is very hard not to look around you and to notice that so many people have so much less.

2. A lot of people spend exorbitant amounts of money not necessarily because they want a particular item, but because it would impress someone else if they had it. That becomes a vicious circle, because you keep having to update these items for the sake of the Joneses'.

Does anybody know a wealthy person who is happy?

All the rich people I know are irritable, impossible to amuse, incredibly opinionated, have zero tolerance for everything, demand perfection in everything around them as if they are gods, continually critcize anything they can, pessimistic, arrogant, fundamentally dishonest, and, as a result, are really p!ss poor people.

The world, and all its hungry, illiterate, sick and hopeless millions of people are not really interested in your desire for a pair of R4,000 sunglasses. ("only if they're photochromic, polarized, unbreakable and completely match the basic, simplistic style I'm after.") - I rest my case.

Overseas holiday R100,000.00 - No. Been there, done that.
Hi Fi R70,000.00 - Probably spent around R40k on what I have.
Dog/cat R9,000.00 - Purchase? No. Vet's Bills? With pleasure and love, yes.
Computer R20,000.00 - Notebook cost R18k, so I suppose, yes.
Car R500,000.00 - Yes.
Cellphone R10,000.00 - No chance, free upgrade.
Lounge Suite R40,000.00 - No way.
Sunglasses R4,000.00 - I'd rather buy a bottle of Ginger beer and look through the bottom. My (2 pairs) of (semi-good) sunglasses cost under R1k - for both.

Add : (every couple of weeks)

Leg of Lamb R150 - Yes
2x Rack of Lamb R90 - Yes
2x Decent Fillet R120 - Yes
Decent red wine R160 - Yes

I know some extremely happy wealthy people. There's a big difference between someone who chases money and someone who has money. Not every person with a few rands extra is necessarily and ass, you know. Besides, if that is their personalities, so be it. You have your opinions and things that make you happy but those are not necessarily the same things that make others happy. R4000 sunglasses may make one person happy where a R4000 tire (Eish, I know...) might make someone else happy. Different strokes...

The rich judge the poor and the poor judge the rich. It's the same cycle, genreation after generation. What makes the one better than the other?
