Valve reveals Steam Machine

About time

Should be released before GTA VI

Lovely, competition is good for the gaming industry!!!

The success will wholly depend on pricing.... it's basically a minipc with a laptop grade CPU and a rx 7600 equivalent GPU...... I wonder if they regret not being able to use a Strix Halo chip set because they were too far in to product development, cause even an 8050s GPU could be better than the rx 7600.

The VR device seems promising though.

No one will call it the Steam Machine lol

Nice little device, but it will only be as good as its price. For interest, Valve did make it clear that this isn't a desktop or PC replacement and that it is ideal to be used to stream Steam games should it be required.

Otherwise, I think this is a cool console. Sadly, though, it will not be available directly here.

Also, DRAM pricing might make this product DOA. That is unless Valve has already secured an allocation.

WTF
I didn't know about this.

It is not only DRAM, NAND is impacted, too. NAND is a whole other issue. HDD, more so the enterprise products, pricing is going up, so data centres, due to scarcity thanks to back orders, are pivoting to NAND that is also in short supply.

I would assume that Valve has already secured the necessary materials. They would have their contract orders in place. The problem we, the consumers, will have is this being exploited at retail. Valve does its own direct business, but we living here will be dependent on parallel imports. Ouch.

This explains why I almost k@kked myself when I opened my cart on Wootware the other day.
This is actually a bit of an issue now, I was going to get a decent Samsung Pro drive so I can start setting it up for my Win10 to Win11 switch for work, but dropping R3K on a little nvme drive just to smooth the transition is a bit much.

The interwebs has specced it at a slightly weaker 7600m, so dont expect miracles or longevity for this "console".. basically a slightly weaker ps5 at this point.

Hopefully this will come with streaming apps as well then I can be free of the google lock in for TV as well.

The consumer market is being snubbed. It is all enterprise revolving around the data center and AI segments. We, the ordinary people, are relegated. I don't think 2026 will be a good consumer year; we are being priced out, and options are being invalidated.

I can only hope that some companies have taken us under consideration and ensured continuity that is not impacted by the enterprise market. They would wish to make dosh, so I won't count on it. There could be some restoration come Q2/Q3 2026.

When I watched AMD's Financial Analyst Day, they rushed through the consumer market things, or client leadership products (IIRC) as they called them. Everything was about AI, and the Q&A was only interested in the near-term gains and, well, energy concerns. They didn't even have the consumer representative on stage during the Q&A.

So yeah, it is all about the stocks.

Perhaps Valve could shine some light into this dark tunnel.

If these AI fever dreams don't pan out in the coming years consumer electronics is probably going to be the least of our problems.
I might need to get that new Steam VR headset so I have something to do while standing in a bread line.

Which bread line do you think will be longer the one if AI does pan out and can do the majority of white collar jobs or the one where it doesn't pan out and we have a big market correction?
