Valve Steam Deck

Ladies and gentlemen,

I present the steam deck at Incredible connection at Canal Walk Cape Town

I asked the guy about it.Said it came in today but had no further info about it.
Seems like there's only one, so don't fight over it now...

Crazy how a $360 handheld hits R15k here while the $399 PS5 Digital is only R9299. Grey import premium I guess.

Not sure actually. Unless you saying it's 6 months? Welp, well I guess we'll see if anyone does decide to buy from them

I haven't seen a distribution channel announced within our region hence I don’t think that Valve’s warranty will apply unless it is sent back to them. I know that some people/companies have been bringing it in, but it isn't through local channels.

Hectic markup

And then IC will probably moan about how they have this stock that isn't moving...

R15k for a Steam Deck is just madness. Even if you take the retail price in the US and add the duties+vat and a 20% markup for transport, you're still sitting with around R4k in profit on the device.

Yup ridiculous overpricing, but this is IC, it's actually listed online as 16k

It's small enough to import directly. Use a reshipping service or maybe Amazon will sell it.
First wait a month or two to see if it has faults.

Quite keen to see what the Ally is actually like. I've enjoyed my Steamdeck but the performance boost of the Ally is tempting.

I think the 120Hz display with VRR alone is a huge upgrade.
I'm not finding that as a motivator for me. On the Steamdeck you need to turn graphics down too much to hit 120fps and at that point I'd prefer having better battery life. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Also, I guess it depends on what games you're playing.

I doubt you're going to hit 120FPS in anything other than indie games, but it's still a massive upgrade, especially the variable refresh rate.

It's going to make everything look and feel buttery smooth.

Main issue so far is windows 11 UI isn't optimized for handheld+ no touchpads and gyro controls.Could be a deal breaker for some.

I think the entry level one probably going to end up being cheaper than the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck at IC is grey import, meaning that they purchased it at retail price then they added shipping, import duties and markup on top of the that price.

Yeah but the mark up is rediculous, you can buy the entry level 64GB model off AMazon for R 11 500 inlcuding shiping and import duties.

That's what I'm cynical about and that is what Valve managed to get right with SteamOS. Hence my wait and see approach rather getting all hyped up for the early adoption train.
