Valve Steam Deck

Steam Deck - 512GB Handheld System

Is it worth it, I want to use it as my computer as well. Think it is possible?
No it's not worth it. Double the US price essentially.

This place has it much cheaper (although I cannot determine how reliable they are): https://www.irobustec.co.za/products/valve-steam-deck-512gb-gaming-console

They don't seem like a scam site, but it's always good to be vigilant and don't do any direct EFT payments to sites you're unfamiliar with.

The price is still too high for my liking but at least it's no outrageously so like Incredible Corruption.

Has anyone bought one locally?
I see they're about R16 000

Steam Deck - 512GB Handheld System

I bought a 64GB Steam Deck through @ScottulusMaximus earlier this year. It was just under R12k landed. I then upgraded the drive to a 512GB, which then cost me around R1.4k, but I see GeeWiz has the same drive now for about R1k.

Much cheaper then getting the 512GB one that way, and the end result's the same, there's nothing else different hardware wise between the 64GB and 512GB ones.

Haven't messed around with it too much as an actual computer, but gaming wise it's managed to play all the games I've been wanting too, some with a little bit of tinkering. I did load Windows On The Go on a MicroSD card as a test, and it works quite well. With a dock you should be able to use a mouse and keyboard, along with a screen and have a reasonable functioning computer.

If it launches in SA it's going to be the same or slightly higher than the current price of the Steam Deck in IC for the base model.

At $700 this will probably cost R20k locally, unless you import it but then you are [probably looking at 16-17k. Awesome machine if you can afford it

Note large ssd Version comes with an anti glare screen. If you're planning to get an aftermarket screen, would suggest go cheapest with ssd, since the anti glare coating means the screen isn't as bright.

I went with the 512GB as use it in trains and flights, and not bothering with protective screen, so the anti glare is useful.

Steam Deck OLED revealed:

I know this is an old thread but currently considering whether to get to a Steam Deck since its on special for R7999 or the Asus ROG Ally for R9999 or an xbox series s for R5999.
My main game I play every year is whichever the latest iteration of FIFA is and I use game pass. I'm drawn to Steam because of the access to so many more games, but I've read that Windows on a Steam Deck can be iffy and that the Ally has similar problems. The Xbox would be a simple upgrade from what I currently have and will work out of the box but then it does come down to not having access to the Steam library.

Suggestions welcome, also if you judge me for the games I play then so be it. :)

I got a Steam Deck oled, PS5 and a beefy gaming PC, and my Steam Deck sees the most use by far.

What's great is how easy it is to eat it is to play for 5 min. You can put it to sleep at any point, like with a console, and then resume. It's starts up fastet from sleep than my TV.
If you have 5 min waiting for your wife, you can resume your rdr2 hunt or whatever you were doing.

It's good for playing in bed as well while your wife reads.

If I was single, it would probably see less use, and i don't like playing big spectacle games like the above mentioned rdr2 on it. I feel those deserve the big screen experience.

It is a backlog killer of note because you get so much more play time than with traditional systems.

If i played fifa. I think it would be perfect for the deck. I don't think there are small elements on screen, or places where enemies are hard to see like in rdr2 that would make it less ideal.

ROG Ally is windows bases thus doesn't have the great sleep functionality, which means it's disqualified in opinion.

I wouldn't bother if I mainly used gamepass, but if you only really play Fifa, do you really need gamepass?
