Quick question.

Does anyone know of an entity that currently has a VANS license that is not using it and would look at the possibility of selling it?

Have come across a development where infrastructure was put in place for localized wireless connectivity. The company that set it up ran it for a few months and then up and disappeared. Needless to say the users (which number up to 400) were slightly upset at this fact given the capital expenditure forked across to the company to set it up and provide the services.

Now the possibility exists that we could "reactivate" the system, but to do so I believe that it should be done within the ambit of the law.

Given that it seems ICASA are going to take a decade before they start issuing licences again, I thought it would be an option to take over an existing license that is not in use or enter into an agreement with a company/person who does have one.

Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

Can one of the mods move this thread to the General Broadband section (or to the relevant area where it would attract the right sort of attention).:)

ICASA are issuing VANS licences - turn around for a simple application = around 3 weeks

market rate for "2nd hand" licences seems to be around R30k as opposed to 6-7k for a new licence

caution: it does sound like you need to maybe look at PTN licensing here (not sure of the facts)

Thanks Dominic.

I was under the impression that ICASA had stopped issuing licenses for the time being until all existing License holders had been re-issued with those under the new act.

If ICASA does not issue us a license, where can we obtain details of those who are willing to sell theirs at the exorbitant premiums  that you mentioned?

Could you eloborate on your caution? What is the difference between a VANS and a PTN license?

oops - sorry RVFmal - seem to have missed this thread

very simplistically
VANS - adds value to the pstn (i.e. the telkom network) e.g. by offering internet connectivity, managed data network services etc
PTN - classic model is using the PSTN to create a VPN between different branch offices of the same organisation

(it is somewhat more complicated when looking at municipalities and communities on the same piece of land)

if you pm me with your details i am sure i can be of more assistance in either helping to get a licence or putting you in touch with a seller

@ LordMerlin - since around March this year

bear in mind we will still be dealing with the licence types under the Telecommunications Act for about another 18 months - it is likely that licence conversion will only take place between sept 08 and feb 09

The bottomline is how would I get bandwidth from Telkom after cabling a 100
houses. The feedback is very positive. But after everybody suspends their Telkom lines how will I give them Internet from a Telkom link? This is what the people are asking me. If I can solve this problem then it is all systems go for laying twistedpair copper across their property boundaries. If I would need to
pay R30000 for a Vans license then so be it. Would this Vans license then oblige Telkom to give me some sort of high bandwidth large cap ADSL link that
would not be available to ordinary users? In other words what would be the wholesale prices?

Telkom does offer wholesale prices. You need a diginet line and a VANS licence to qualify...I think
