I have a newly purchased vantec ion2+ 520 Watt PSU from Proche c y shop
It was recommended by almosta ll users on this forum for my rig:

Intel q9400 Quad 2.66GHz
Intel DG45ID mobo
Asus ATI RADEON 4890 1GD DDR5
Samsung 2333SW LCD
3GB DDR2 800 RAM
Windows 7 prof 64 bit

Whenever i play a game like GTA 4 for more than 5 or so minutes the screen goes into a standby mode seemingly and after a few seconds the pc shuts down, could it be the PSU to blame?

I'd find it hard to see why has you can see my psu is rated lower and specs on par and i've put my pc in its paces running both cpu/gpu versions of folding@home simultaneously for days.

But do you have any other guess as to why it may be happening, last week i could jam any game endlessly but all of a sudden ( and before then) ive had this error, throw in some BSOD and i just wanna cry man

You're going to have to swap components to try and track it down.
If you can get hold of a spare PSU, graphics card and maybe RAM, just as a loan, you can try and figure which one it might be.
Maybe a fellow myBBer who is nearby can help out.

I really should stay out of this thread because I know so little, but have you tried monitoring CPU/GPU temps? Maybe a heatsink/fan not doing its thang...

CPUs overheating will happily shut themselves off

Most true. From the OP it seems GPU switches off first, then CPU follows.
What are the temps like while this is happening?

Any ideas??

Pretty much what the otehr are saying, temps of your components when under load/idle and then you are going to have to resort to swopping out components until you find the culprit :(

Ill go out and get another fan and try improve the airflow, but if the PSU was the culprit (alrthough i really dont think it is) then adding components wont help, ill see what another fan can do

The Vantec's are good PSUs, but one cannot disregard the fact that your's might be bad. It's going to have to be a component swap out story.

Try and take your graphics card to a friend's place and try it on their machine. If it works there without hassle then you can start focusing on the other components.

Have you checked how hot it is getting when it does this? No point putting another fan in when heat is not the issue.

I dont really suspect the vantec coz i an use the pc endlessly when not playing a demanding game, say multi tasking, 20 tabs open, music emails etc etc my broadband and no prob...

Im looking for something to show my gpu and cpu temps, i didnt get anyprogram with the 4890

http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

Use that to find your max temps. No installation required, it's just an exe.
It does sound like a heat issue, however, as if it were a power issue, you'd see it a lot quicker than only after a few minutes. Anyway, run HW Monitor and see what it says.

That would consume next to nothing compared to a gaming card going full tilt. I've got a Vantec 600W, a AMD 955BE quad, a motherboard with integrated HD3300 GPU, about 3 drives, etc, etc, and on idle it's only using 98W. Give it a job to do using all cores and memory intensive and it peaks at 165W consumed. :P

My gpu is running anywhere from 90 degrees and up!! I cant reduce this because i need an extra fan which i dont have right now. THE FANS ON THE 4890 ARE NOT SPINNING!!!!!!????? what can i do geees

Sounds hot to me. Then again, not sure what gpu temp limits are these days, but 90 sounds "slightly toasty".

Wonder why the won't be spinning. Are the fan headers connected properly or maybe bumped loose?

What fans you have in that case right now? Maybe you can move one temporarily?

The way you have the power connected to the GFX card sounds dodgy...? Can you take a pic and post it here perhaps...?
