Varsity Football is back, and starts today. It's the same format as last year, 8 universities, playing a single round robin, followed by semi-finals and a final.

This year's teams:

NMMU
NWU-Mahikeng

Tuks
UWC

TUT should have qualified, but were banned for using an ineligible player at last years USSA championship.

Another huge win for UJ, it looks like they are now the favourites to win.

18:00 UFS vs UJ Shimla Park

NMMU still hanging in there!! My colleague's son captains the side...

Not doing as well as last year, but still in with a good chance of making the semis. Kurt Duff has been a stand out over the last 2 years.

Week 4 results:

Tuks 5-1 UL
NMMU 1-2 UWC
UFS 2-2 UJ
NWU 6-0 UCT

The log has taken shape, with NWU leading on 10 points. They are followed by UJ on 8 and UFS on 7. UCT and Limpopo are rooted to the bottom, having yet to win a match.

Tonight is the Varsity Football final.

UJ play Tuks at the UJ Soweto Sports Complex. Kick off is at 7pm with coverage on SS10.

UJ destroyed Tuks 4-0 during the round robin, and I expect them to win again tonight.

I was wrong. Tuks won 1-0 last night to retain the Varsity Football trophy.

TUT won the women's section, beating Tuks 5-0.

Season 3 gets underway today. Once again there are 8 teams, this year they are:

NMMU
NWU Pukke
Tuks
TUT
UWC
Vaal University of Technology
Wits
Walter Sisulu

This year there are 3 games on Mondays and 1 on Thursdays. Week 1 fixtures:

Today
17:00 Wits vs UWC Bidvest Stadium (Supersport 4, 10)
18:00 VUT vs NMMU Isak Steyl Stadium
18:00 WSU vs NWU Pukkue Mthatha Campus

Thursday
18:30 TUT vsTuks TUT Stadium (Supersport)

Three home wins last night:

UWC 2-1 Tuks
TUT 3-1 WSU
Wits 1-0 NMMU

Tuks look to be dethroned this year, though they have always been slow starters. It's not looking good for NMMU.

On Thursday VUT host NWU Pukke at 6.30.

Results:

Tuks 0(1)-(4)0 TUT
UWC 0(4)-(2)0 Wits

UWC will now host TUT on 24 September in the final.
