I'm not sure if anyone is following this new tournament, but it started yesterday. It is run by Varsity Sports SA, and is endorsed by SAFA and USSA. It has the same system as the Varsity Cup, 8 university teams each play each other once, over a 7 week period. The top 4 teams then advance to the semi-finals, followed by the final.

The 8 teams are:

NMMU (Port Elizabeth)
NWU (Mafikeng)
Tuks (Pretoria)
TUT (Pretoria)
UCT (Cape Town)
UWC (Cape Town)
Wits (Joburg)

Results from last night:

Wits 0-4 NWU
Tuks 1-4 TUT
UWC 0-2 NMMU
UFS 1-1 UCT

It's interesting, that the 2 universities with professional teams, Wits and Tuks, both had home matches and lost.

The next round is on 29 August:
16:30 Tuks vs Wits Tuks Rugby Stadium (SS4)
19:00 UCT vs NMMU The Green Mile
19:00 NWU vs UFS Mafikeng Sports Fields (SS4)
19:00 UWC vs TUT UWC Stadium

My team got pumped :( 1-4 to Tut.

I think the team that plays for Tuks is different from the PSL team isn't it?

Tuk's starting goalkeeper was Tristyn Coetzee, who has a pro contract, but didn't start a PSL match last season. I'm not sure on the exact elligibility rules, but if it's like the Varsity Cup, they may allow non-students.

Week 2 results:
Tuks 2 – 0 Wits
UCT 0 – 4 NMMU
UWC 1 – 2 TUT
NWU 6 – 1 UFS

That means that NWU leads follwed by NMMU and TUT, all on 6 points. Tuks have 3, UCT and UFS have 1 each, and UWC and Wits are on 0.

watched the game yesterday , some brilliant players on NWU team.

They are the form team. I thought it would be interesting to show at what level of club football these teams normally play at. This list is made up of my own findings so it could be wrong, if you know which leagues these university sides play in please post them. Tiers refer to the level on the football pyramid, PSL is 1, NFD is 2 and so on:

NMMU: PEFA Premier League 5th tier
NWU: SAFA 2nd Division 3rd tier
Tuks: SAFA Tshwane League 4th tier (Pro team in the PSL)
TUT: unknown
UCT: Cape District Premier League 5th tier
UFS: SAFA Regional League Stream B 4th tier
UWC: unknown
Wits: unknown (Pro teams in PSL and SAFA 2nd Division)

Tomorrow's fixtures:

UFS – UWC Shimla Park 16:30 (SS4)
Tuks – NMMU Tuks Stadium 19:00 (SS8)
TUT – NWU TUT Stadium 19:00
UCT – Wits The Green Mile 19:00

Last night's results:

UFS 1-1 UWC
Tuks 1-1 NMMU
TUT 1-0 NWU
UCT 0-1 Wits

TUT lead with 9 points, followed by NMMU with 7 and NWU with 6.

Pity about NMMU stadium - any chance we'll still get a match there?

NMMU should still have 2 home matches. Wits on 19 August and UFS on 2 September.

I'm not sure if it's a stadium problem, or if it's the problem with the access road. Varsity Sports' website says that match was moved "due to unforeseen infrastructure upgrade to be done at NMMU over this time." While it sucks that NMMU couldn't host the match elsewhere, it does stick to the precedent set with UCT rugby.

The stadium lights were falling down so the stadium was deemed unfit for use - they had until the end of July to pull them all down.

Oh wow that's bad. Both the remaining matches are 7pm kickoffs, and even 4.30 matches will end under lights. That's a real mess by NMMU.

From my point of view those lights needed upgrading - they were horribly underpowered.

It's always a little dark, but it's a university stadium, bust of the seating is cement steps. Pro teams hardly use the stadium, and there are very few televised matches either.

I can see why better light would help you as a photographer though.

Bloody hell, we gave those okes from UCT a solid klap :D

I'm more surprised by Wits, they have a pro setup, although mostly detached from the university. I was still expecting them to do well, but they are 2nd from the bottom. As for UCT, I don't know what's wrong with them, don't they have a football program?

Round 5 results:

TUT 3-1 UCT
NMMU 4-1 Wits
NWU 2-1 UWC
UFS 0-4 UP-Tuks

TUT lead with 13 points, followed by NMMU on 11, both are through to the semi-finals. NWU and Tuks have 10 and UWC has 4. UFS and WIts have 3 and UCT has 1, and all 3 are out of the running for the play offs.

Round 6 fixtures:

16:30 TUT vs NMMU TUT Stadium (SS4)
19:00 NWU vs UCT Mafikeng Sports Fields (SS7)
19:00 Wits vs UFS Bidvest Stadium
19:00 Tuks vs UWC Tuks Stadium

Round 6 results:

TUT 1-1 NMMU
Tuks 1-0 UWC
NWU 2-1 UCT
Wits 0-2 UFS

Going into the final round, TUT, NWU, Tuks and NMMU are assured of semi-final places. Any one of those teams can finish 1st though.
