Vasectomy advice

so does one look up a number for a urologist to setup an appointment?

Seriously ... look up Marie Stopes Clinic. They're in all major centres and at around a grand you won't find anything cheaper (ok anything decent I meant)
Procedure around 15 minutes, total consultation around 45 minutes (they seem to feel the need to counsel you about the snip before you go ahead)

they've got a website

good on you McSack. You username is quite appropriate for this topic.

Where's the fun in shooting blanks? Maybe discuss the pill as an option with your partner?

I had it done a few years ago. Mostly painless. Just a dull ache for 24 hours after the op. 1 stitch and the doc said I could go to gym the next day.
Discovery medical aid paid in full - R3000 approx. The whole thing took about 20 minutes.

A friend wasn't so lucky. The stitch got infected and his little friend turned all kinds of fancy colors. Like any procedure it's not without risk but 99% of people have no issues.

The doc mentioned that reversal is possible and these days a very successful procedure. Medical aid will not pay for a reversal and he said the cost was 'usually between R65k and R80k' done under general anesthetic and takes 4 hours.

is it done while you are awake or also dosed out ?

Thinking of having one, anyone got any doctor recommendations (or recommendations against) in Gauteng? What sort of cost is involved? will medical aid generally cover it?

Do you have kids though? Doc's are fairly unlikely to agree to do it if you don't have kids yet.

I would imagine that it's not really their decision to make. Some people don't want kids - I know of a few.

You can choose. I chose local. The guy in the bed next to me was doing it under general. If you go for general anesthetic it costs a bit more because you need an anesthesiologist there, you spend a full day in hospital being monitored for post op issues.

I vote for local though. When else do you get 5 nurses playing with your nether regions willingly and remember it?

Have you seen our SA nurses?

Maybe that's why he did it under general anesthetic :p

The pill has all kind of side effects on ladies though. If you are married with kids etc. The simplest route is the snip.

Well even if I do get a snip I'd always wrap it before I tap it. With women sleeping around as much as they do these days (yes even the married ones or ones in "committed" relationships) I don't want to die for a few minutes of pleasure...

This reminds me of the thing at work. We had openly discussed The Snip over lunch. I was thinking about getting it done it and a colleague was telling us about it, much like the info in this thread. The next day he started getting flirty SMS's several of which referred to 'no risk sex'. About a week later it turned out to be a female colleague who had sat in on the conversation. She was married but looking for something on the side and decided this was a 'safe' option. She got divorced about a year later.

Not on Discovery. I had 1 red head, 2 blonds and 2 brunettes. To be completely honest the Doc was also there and he had a grey beard and one of the brunettes was a male nurse but I usually leave that part out.

Is a vasectomy reversible ?
If you're already thinking along those lines don't have it done. Use some other form of contraception
Vasectomy is reversable but pretty complicated and therefore fsk-off expensive
